4x4 Self Drive Tour

Featured Replies

Can anybody provide some leads on 4x4 self drive tours near BKK (near means within 4 hr drive)?

What we are looking for is serious off road tour were the fully equipped car (hilux / virago / jeep / landrover / MAYBE Suzuki) is provided as part of the arrangement. Fully equipped means MT tyres, winch, recovery equipment & possibly diff locks. IE serious fun stuff. We are experienced off roaders with reasonably capable machines of our in in Oz ,and dont want to spend time sitting in a car travelling just dirty tracks.

There USED to be a company near Kanachanburi that operated through the national park under licence (cost fully catered and escorted was US$660 each for about 10 days - shorter options avail too). Cant find them on the internet anymore, and TAT are unresponsive :)

Alternatively we would be interested in a local 4x4 club that was doing something like this in Oct/Nov. Unfortunately we only speak english.

We have sourced an expereinced english speaking guide for all the touristy type locations.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not an expert on this sort of thing here, but from my normal driving experience in Thailand over 11 years, you just won't find what you are looking for within 4 hours of Bangkok, or even 8.

Back home in Oz, we'd find the right sort of terrain within an hour or so of a major city. Thailand roads are paved out of all proportion to the upcountry motoring needs and even finding a dirt road upcountry is not that easy, let along "bush tracks." And I would think the company at Kanchanaburi operating in a national park (?) was doing so with money under the table and is now out of business. I am familiar with National Parks here and you generally can't get bikes in, let alone 4WD vehicles. I have a 4WD Toyota Vigo that is used in a very remote part of Nan province and seldom even get to use the 4WD. Roads are either paved, reasonable dirt roads, or just tracks for motor bikes or walkers.

But someone could prove me quite wrong on all of this. Happy hunting!

although it is small and now many roads have some pavement samui still has 4x4 trails worth driving. rental agents offer 4x4 tigers so make a trip down if you want to get the blood running.
