Korat Cat

Featured Replies

Hi everybody. Moving this myself to the pet forum having previously posted in the Phuket section. I have been looking to buy a Korat kitten for some time and am really struggling. It seems here it's all Persians, nothing but Persians and by the way, would you like a Persian?

I have searched the forum and found a suggestion of a breeder here in Phuket. After actually finding her today I can confirm that she only had - (Hazard a guess..) Persians.

Searching for anything on the web on this subject is a nightmare. Any mention of Korat/Thailand/Bangkok and it brings up the same old history of the breed on everyones website. There was one post on a website about breeders throughout the country, but having tried them all, the phone numbers are all invalid now. Another suggestion has been JJ market - this is a route I really want to avoid if I can. I have seen the kittens for sale in the markets here and don't want the heartache of a sick kitten and would really like to view the parents in-situ if possible.

Anyone have any suggestions? (Other than buy a Persian!)

(BTW, I have also tried Soi Dog locally and not been too impressed so far with their efforts to re-home any of their animals)

Thanks, I saw that one. No contact details other than Phimai though. If you then search that you get a page that yields the following details:

Mr. Chuchai Wiset-jindawat. President, Korat Cat Conservation Club

of Phimai

(Wife Sumali runs the cattery) 586 Moo 14, Naimuang district, Phimai,

Nakhon Ratchasima 30110

Tel 044-471230, mobile 01 999 3542

The phone numbers are not active. Thanks for trying though.

The best lead I have so far is a shop behind Robon Hood pub on Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 called Furr Purr. Apparantly the woman in there breeds them. Can't find a number for it though. I think I am going to have to schedule a trip up to Bangkok and have a look.

It's a long shot, but have you tried inserting an "8" between the "0" and the "1" in the mobile number? Thailand changed its numbering plan a few years back from 9-digit to 10-digit mobile numbers, so the new number would be 081 999 3542. Might be worth a try.

Anyway, it appears to me that Thais use the word "Persian" for what we in the west would call "pedigree cat". The most common question I get when somebody sees one of my Ragdolls is "Is it a Persian?". There is no way somebody who has ever seen a Persian would think my cats are of that breed! I'm beginning to think that they're really asking "Is it a purebred cat?". It might be worth some further enquiry when somebody mentions "Persians" :)

BTW, if you stumble over a breeder of "Khao Manee" cats, would you please let me know (preferably by PM)?

/ Priceless

Singha...if you manage to find a Korat cat breeder could you post some contact details here. Thanks.
