March 4, 200521 yr If you are just visiting and want a truly different kind of visit then the Lahu village of dpoy mouk is one of a kind. Travel by yellow bus leaving from acroos from esso gas station near warut market. Pay 35 badt to get to Moung Noi, just before the hot springs. Wait at side of the road for a pick up truck and ask the way to Doy Mouk. Left after trekker lodge and then next left. Ask for the house of Nasir and Chupawl. They are familar with tourists. Then you can stay for a coulpe of days or just one. You can see the real jungle and real waterfalls through the eyes of Lahu's who live with the jungle daily. This is not an ad for anything just a suggestion for a eye opening time.
March 7, 200521 yr Yes I know the area well. Good place to visit, indeed. But less adventurous these days with a paved road and all. (Except for the very last bit up to that village) Cheers, Chanchao
March 13, 200521 yr Author Well the way things are the road will be washed out with the next rainy season. but true it is a easy trip from Chiang Mai these days. Still worth the trip to Doy Mouk.
March 13, 200521 yr Sounds like a good way to spend a couple of days. Can I drive there from CM? Leave the car somewhere? Or better to be dropped off and picked up?
March 14, 200521 yr You can drive there easily from Chiang Mai, either car or motorbike. I'd say a pick-up truck or Suzuki Jeep or moped would be better suited than a passenger car, especially for the last bit up to Doi Mouk and around. In the rainy season you'd need 4WD also. But when it's dry it's very easy. Alternatively you get on the bus to Chiang Rai or the songthaew buses to Wiang Pa Pao and get off at the little road going up to Muang Noi, this is about 1 km before the Mae Khachan hot springs. From the turn-off you'd have to hitch a ride, many locals do this too. Better just rent a Honda Dream or a Suzuki Jeep. It's easy to find, when you get to the hot springs then you're too far, so you go back and take the first real road on the left across the bridge. There's some signs there for Trekker's Lodge (place to stay) and other things. Aside from staying in peoples homes and Trekker's Lodge, up on the hill at Huay Nam Rin Lahu village are 2 bunglalows that rent for 500 baht or so. Near the Royal Project close by. So there are some accommodation options. Cheers, Chanchao
