Buying An External Dvd Drive

Featured Replies

My dell laptop came with a read only DVD (my mistake) so it is about time I purchase an external DVD read/write drive.

I checked out the available slim unit models not that I necessary need a slim model right now, unless I get a netbook in the future and want to lug a DVD drive with me.

I found a samsung model S084 for 1950b made in Indonesia with a 1 year warranty and a buffalo model for 1900b made in China with a 2 year warranty.

Anyone have the Buffalo model which appears to be a better value. I also found a large shop selling it for 1700B. I am not sure why it was 10% cheaper unless it is a refurb which I was unable to determine.

Edit: I forgot to mentionI currently use XP Pro SP2. I just read this "Just a hands up, be careful with this DVD burner because I had been trying to burn DVD-R and DVD-RW using Windows XP Pro in three different computers and it still does not work."

That would be Samsung SE-S084. Stick with the Samsung or try LG.

The Samsung was my original 1st choice until I saw the Buffalo model especially with the 2 year warranty.

Can elaborate why Samsung or LG is your preferences and not Buffalo?

Because I've been using Samsung and LG drives for many years without mishap. Never used Buffalo.

If it is any help i have a LG DVD slim reader /writer for for my netbook . I have only used it a few times but no problems with it yet . As for Buffalo i run a Buffalo external hard drive for back-ups and for storage of photos. I have had it about 3 years now and again no problems with the quality and reliability .

I have the buffalo and its fine, have used it many many times without problem.

Can you tell me which OS you are using?

As I mentioned, I found a web comment that someone had a problem with their DVD using XP Pro which is what I have.

Thanks to you all for your comments

Ive used it on windows home and pro with no problem, havnt used it on vista but no reason why it should not work with that.

If you intend to use the external drive only with your Dell laptop, you might also consider the option of just replacing the internal drive.

I decided to buy the Buffalo DVD drive. I paid 1700baht was for a brand new unopened box at Pantip in CM. They wanted 1990baht. As I have mentioned, the main selling point was that it came with a 2 year warranty followed by the very cheap price. I remember reading here a few times that when you purchase items here in Thailand, occasionally the item begins to develop problems just after the warranty expires. I guess, I am guaranteed at least 2 years of flawless use. :)

Actually, since I already have a dvd "read only" drive in my dell notebook, i'll be using it to read my cds and use the Buffalo to write to dvds which wont be that often.

Thanks for all the advice. :D
