Internet Coverage In The Uk

Featured Replies

This is not a technical topic but is more of a general question for UK expats visiting the UK.

I'm leaving the UK on a house hunting trip on Saturday and need to take my laptop so that I can keep in contact with agents etc and I wonder how other expats have managed their temporary WiFi connections during their temporary stays in the UK in the past?

So, what do you guys do? Presumably you use a home based internet subscription but since I don't have a home there, what to do - I'm going to be traveling in the South and South West and had hoped to be able to buy a single temporary account but I can't find such a thing! Coverage also seems seems to be an issue - any clues?

thanks in advance

You're a gentleman and a scholar, thank you. Any idea which of the providers give best coverage these days? Again, I'm going to be in the South and the South West.

Vodafone and O2 should be the best for countrywide coverage. Three uses O2's network where they don't have one of their own. I have found Orange and T-mobile coverage not up to O2 and Vodafone's level.

Vodafone seems to have best coverage but maybe it is not the same throughout the country.

You can check coverage here:

Vodafone coverage

This is for T mobile and the others should have the same kind of coverage check.

T mobile coverage

If you will be in rural areas check your coverage carefully.

I am only able to use Vodafone and only just.

It is pretty easy to set up, you can top up online and access anywhere as long as you have coverage of course.

But if travelling you can of course plan to be somewhere where you can access at some stage of the day, by checking the coverage online and planning ahead.

Make sure your laptop has a good battery in it otherwise power connection is a further constraint, if you have to walk/drive around to get a connection!

Whilst not necessarily agreeing with your answer about coverage, I will add that you also get use of The Cloud and BT OpenZone wireless hotspots if you use O2.

Coverage maps can be found here.

See this thread for a cheap USB modem(£5) which you can unlock any use with any 3G SIM.

I base this on the fact that I have had phones on Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Orange (My current network). Vodafone have been fine in my home and in my parents home in Cornwall, as have O2. T-mobile was fine in my home, but coverage in cornwall wasn't as good. My contract with Orange runs out next month and I won't be renewing. I live in a large town in Surrey and I can sometimes struggle to get a decent reception in my home.
