Rebuilding Of Pattaya Beach Program

Featured Replies

Pattaya Mayor, Khun Itthiphol Khunplome, recently chaired a meeting at Pattaya City Hall to discuss plans for the restructuring of the landscape of Pattaya Beach with relevant parties.

The project was first discussed back in 1989, when the company JICA, had made a study to determine the various problems that were occurring within Pattaya and submitted a ‘master-plan’ on measures necessary for the future of the city. Nine reconstruction projects were suggested; five to develop infrastructure and four to develop the Pattaya coast.

On the 14th August 1990, the cabinet approved the plan as urgent, and categorised the projects into two groups.

17th August 1992, the Department of Civil Engineering was ordered to perform the urgent projects outlined by JICA in their report. The five urgent projects were the building up of the sand at South Pattaya, construction on Bali Hai Pier at the end of 3rd Road, reconstruction of Pattaya Beach, construction on Koh Larn Island of Pier 5, and construction of Pattaya Third Road.

Khun Itthiphol explained to the meeting that he requires a new name for the project, which better suits the major construction and re-construction projects that are to be undertaken. With the ever decreasing coastline of Pattaya, urgent action is required to rebuild the beaches to at least the standard of years past. Tourists visiting Pattaya expect, and should be provided with, a beach of the finest quality.

He went on to explain that it will be a continuous project to try and improve beach amenities and that the most important issue at this time, is not the new construction projects that are in the pipeline, but the policing of local residents who insist on encroaching onto public beach land to earn a living. He explained that in reality, the number of tourists visiting Pattaya had not dropped because of poor beaches, but as a result of the overall impression of the city falling badly.

well the hundreds of powerboats spewing petrol at the seashore aren't helping that and they were supposed

to start operating out of bali-hai pier when that was completed? that's most of your problem right there.

And they had it until around 2003/4 when a group of total idiots decided to remove most of the old growth trees and replace them with palm trees. That is what caused the erosion (those old shade trees, "umbrella trees" have a massive and complicated root system that actually hold sand in place).

I still remember the chain saws coming out and the trees going down, one by one, in Pattaya all the way to the southern tip of Jomtien Beach. What an environmental disaster!

Also, global warming/climate change is causing larger wave action.............that is another reason for the erosion.

So, with one idiot move, they reduced the shade on the beaches and caused erosion.
