Hi all,

this is my first post on this site. Like all i think getting a visa is a very daunting prospect (i really think it shouldn't be), and i have had lots of miss-guided advice to whether i would be able to get a visa for my girl friend to come over to England.

I am student finishing my degree and technically don't have a job/ income so i realize as far as sponsorship goes i cant really help, however i am unsure as to whether my parents can act as my girlfriends Guarantee for the trip? (without going into details) they have the assets to prove that she will not be a burden on the government resources and have met her before and know of our relationship. I want her to come back over christmas so we would be staying at my parents house anyway...

either way i am so confused by farang telling me no they cant but my thai friends who have got a visa previously under the same sort of circumstances saying yeh its 'easy' just get them to write a covering letter

if anyone has any experience with this please get in touch i could do with some advice. Plus/or does anyone know anyone i could contact for professional advice about this. or simply could i just ask at the embassy, do they give out that kind or information?

its very frustrating i have the money to pay for her trip and my parents are willing to help me by being our 'saftey nett'.... what to do??

any help is much appreciated

thanks Ch23

Friend of mine used his family as guarantor for his TG, now wife, about 18 months ago. He had no job, house or income in UK and she was in same situation here. Did help though that his father was retired director of a UK PLC and had 7 figure bank balance etc.

I see no problem with a letter from your parents confirming they have invited her to stay and that they will be responsible for all her expenses in the UK. Copy of a passport, bank statement, which both confirms funds and address, of one parent should be attached as supporting documentation. You should include evidence of your student status. After that it depends on her status and what they think of the overall package of your gf, parents and you. I think you will have no problem in getting a short term tourist visa for her, if she is also a full time degree student and can submit evidence of this and something in the bank, say B100-200k, that has been there a few months. If she isn't and has no job but comes from a wealthy family who can provide evidence of this, also no problem. It will be a problem to convince them, if she has no occupation and no wealthy family, as they will think she has nothing to come back to and might run off in the UK, as so many others must have done to make them so paranoid. BTW don't be shy to submit more documentation than is requested, if you think it can help. They can always throw it in the bin, if they are not interested, but Western embassy visa sections, in my experience, do have a habit of asking for supplementary documentation that is not included in their checklist.

Hi Ch23,

I am a full-time student and my Thai partner (also a student) came over to the UK to visit earlier this year. I have attached a copy of the sponsor letter from me (Sponsor1.doc) and the letter from my parents (Sponsor2.doc), download them as they will give a good indication of what you need to include.

For my partner's visa application we included 5 sections:

1) Evidence of Sponsorship

2) Evidence of Existing Relationship

3) Evidence that the Applicant will not overstay (ie. work, university, family commitments back in Thailand)

4) Daily itinerary of travel in the UK.

5) Signed Declaration from Applicant and Sponsor.

The two sponsor letters and all the appendages (pictures of the house, bank statements, utility bills etc..) covered section one.

If you need any more advice you can PM me.

well thanks very much everybody, very encouraging indeed.

i wish i had only known all this a couple months back as i am just a week short of a 14 week visit and having come eager to get a visa after talking to an uncle who also has a thai wife he completely put me off trying.

but once again i have restored the faith. thanks again hopefully i can get it together in a week.

shes not a student herself, but she has a degree (in music) and is in the music/entertainment industry in bangkok (before anyone thinks of sleezy bars and walking street) its not like that and she comes from a 'more' well off family than most. although she doesn't have much savings in the bank (maybe 20,000-30,000) she does own a car and her and her elderly mother own a apartment. she looks after her mother (as thai families do) who herself is an famous old style singer with savings (to which extent im not sure but i think its around 1,000,000 or so bht in the bank.)

but in reply to Arkady having a wealthy(ish) thai parent how exactly would that help? other than showing she has a comfortable life in bkk and is not just planning on running away...?

two more bigger issues im still pondering is that

A. she earns maybe 15,000- 25,000 per month depending on work but its all in cash and may different employers/bands etc.. how can i possibly prove them all? / everything she earns is cash (do thai people pay tax btw!!!!)

B. she has a daughter (which she has full custody over). as this is the first time and her daughter is still young she will be traveling alone. do the authorities make a big problem when a child or is involved or is just the case of showing that one of her many close family mebers is happy to look after her for a couple of weeks?

she has been to a few countries like loas and Malaysia before and last year she was granted a 3 month working visa in kuala lumper with her band.. so shows she respects the rules. + points right ?

but would this be a credit when visiting europe???

thanks alot

She will obviously need to show that she has what is known as a 'reason to return' which should be pretty simple in her case, I'd have thought. She should also show what arrangements she has made for the child while she is away.

Whoever is funding the visit will need to provide evidence of their ability to do so, and write a covering letter explaining why they are doing so,
