Three new pieces of equipment are helping the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police General Hospital solve crime.

Few people are aware of the extent of the role forensic scientists play in solving crimes, hospital surgeon-general Somyos Deemak said.

Forensic scientists can piece together vital clues from the jigsaw of evidence left at the crime scene, he said.

The Royal Thai Police, which recognises the importance of forensic science, has agreed to provide the institute with three new pieces of equipment to improve its work, Pol Lt Gen Somyos said.

The institute is the only forensics agency with the technology, he said.

What an informative article about the 3 new pieces of equipment. I learnt alot. I also appreciate the mystery quiz that comes with the article where we can guess what the 3 mystery articles are. Lemme see now;

1. A paper bag where items can be placed to ensure that they won't become contaminated as is likely to be the case when Sgt, Wingnut puts the object in his pocket.

2. Some tape that the intrepid investigators can use to collect fiber samples. It won't be cheap tape, but the fancy imported stuff from Scotland: Scotch tape to be dispensed from a container with a serrated edge so the investigators don't contaminate the tape when they cut it.

3. A petri dish where a culture can be grown once the lab splurges on some tissue scrapers and agar. (That's in the next big purchase.)

I didn't see mention of it, but I bet the vendors tossed in a wicked cool certificate of forensic authenticity so that the investigators will have proof of the advanced training necessary to use these 3 state of the art devices.

I am surprised that they didn't buy a new megaphone or microphone for the lovely voice of forensic sciences in Thailand. That way she can make public pronouncements in as many public venues as possible.

Actually, they didn't have to buy anything. Everyone is so sure they will get caught with all this new technology that they are now writing out their confessions and turning themselves in as we speak!

Oh and dont forget to preserve the scene, once all the BIB have walked in to have a look, next door neighbours, maids etc, oh and the newspapers have been all over it for photos, then there are the TV crews of course...yes thats it after all of that, preserve the scene so its not contaminated, then get your shiny new stuff out and see who dunnit.

WOW! :)

That's very good news; I hope they will start with those three new pieces of instruments, searching for the truth in the "exploded" German, Mr. Keienburg.

Since it was made clear a few years back that they don't even have a national gun registry for the police (who purchase their own guns) and so cannot tell who has been shot by anyone based on the weapons, it is not so surprising that forensic science is not terribly advanced here.
