For a work permit you need to be employed by a Thai based company, unless it is a branch of an international organisation. The company must meet several criteria, such as the ratio of Thai/foreign employees etc. Even if you work for yourself.

Volunteering requires a registered charity or government organisation for which you volunteer and a minimum of 4 hours a week on avarage. it would than also entitle you to an extension of stay based on volunteering.

Since you are married to a Thai the company or business only needs to 2 employees for you to get a work permit.

You can form a company or partnership and get a work permit.

It is also possible for your wife to register a business as a sole trader and you get a work permit.

The info in this topic is a bit dated but is close to being correct. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Department-E...0/#entry188450/
