COUP ANNIVERSARY

Sept 19 rally will be peaceful, Jatuporn says

The red-shirt rally planned for September 19 to mark opposition over the 2006 coup will a one-day event,

organisers said yesterday, in a bid to dismiss concern about a lengthy protest.

"The red shirts will rally for just one day on September 19 before dispersing around midnight," organiser Jatuporn Promphan said.

Jatuporn sought to play down speculation that the rally might spiral out of control and become an uprising to overthrow the government.

He said authorities had gone overboard to portray the red shirts in a bad light.

"If the government is to collapse, its downfall will be triggered by its own flaws and not outside elements like the red shirts."

He criticised government plans to enforce the security law, claiming the situation did not warrant such measures.

He said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva should reflect on the state of disarray within the coalition instead of trying to blame to the red shirts for problems.

Abhisit's predicament was his feelings had been hurt by coalition allies over the nomination of a new police chief and defence minister, he said.

If a coup happened while Abhisit was in New York later this month, it would only be because of the prime minister's "stupidity" in enforcing the security law, and paving way for his allies to oust him, he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban voiced optimism that he could control the rally. He asked people not to speculate about the rally, saying that would cause undue concern.

He vowed to keep the peace and prevent the crowd from turning unruly, saying he would put every contingency in place, including possible enforcement of the security law.

He dismissed claims that Abhisit might suffer the same fate as that befell Thaksin, who was in New York three years ago when topped by the coup.

Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul said politics could be at a critical juncture because changes often occurred in September or October.

Meanwhile, former prime minister Chuan Leekpai said the government should be careful about the red shirts' protest on September 19, as nobody would forgive them if chaos erupted again like that in Pattaya in April.

"The government should be more careful concerning the September 19 rally. Otherwise there could possibly be problems like what happened in Pattaya in April," Chuan said.

"Nobody would forgive if such chaos happened again."

Red-shirt protesters stormed a building where the Asean Summit was being staged in Pattaya on April 11, forcing the government to cancel the event. Top overseas leaders had to be evacuated from the hotel by helicopter before flying home.

It is about time to stop these non senses. It has been 5 years and everyone has moved on and system seems to be in full control.

I think the government need to deploy full force to insure they can stop any chaos and also like US charge the organizers charge the expense of these deployments. That should stop the organizers from destroying this country a bit at a time

Really?

Could have sworn it was only 3.

I agree These protests need to stop. ALL of them, not that people don't have a right to protest but's been done and gone. Can we please work on the problems of RIGHT NOW. Or even better the ones were preparing for TOMORROW?

The latest Insights from an Editorial by The Nation, regarding

the selfless Philanthropist's remarks in his latest Radioadress:

.....................

The most optimistic analysis of Thaksin's Wednesday statement has him concerned and tired like all of us. The most cynical tells us that if someone like him is concerned, we should be doubly alarmed.

Koo82 and Ferwit were collateral damage from SRJ's expulsion. :)

They took one for the team, eh? :D

Like putting forward a pawn to get a knight in Chess.

I believe Furwart was gone just prior to this.

Didn't realize Koo was x'd at the same time.

I very much doubt for the same reasons in each case.

Poor Koo was getting more and more out of touch with the mainstream.

I did like her, in an odd sort of way.

I very much doubt there was anything like a quid pro quo involved on any level.

A simple check of her profile will reveal that Koo is still amongst us. Consider the source of this "news".

True, the source is... [insert word of choice here]... :)

Would not having the accuracy or veracity of Jatuporno fit?

In which case it goes back to my original point many posts later;

Koo is rather silent lately. :D

Pulled back by the reddened leadership till a better moment to

''strike a chord of FEAR in the farang community!!!' :D

They will stop when they do not get paid their Baht 500 a day. It's rather lucrative to protest, the alternative is work for less.

There was a brief mention today in an article from today's Krungtep Turakij saying that about 300 million Baht has been mysteriously channelled from somewhere in the middle east to Thailand recently.

http://newsroom.bangkokbiznews.com/comment...amp;user=chalao

Translated headline "The Mystery of 300 million that comes straight from "Dubai"" :D:)

that "newspaper" seems to be a division of theNation -

probably from a dodgy source with ulterior motives.

probably not even true :D
