Amazing Thailand. No, not losing sleep over this but sort of funny.

Last week I went to 7-11. 3 people in store, 2 thais and me, 1 girl working. As I am walking towards the counter with one item, another girl customer rushes up to just make it in front of me, she sees I only have 1 item. She then order lots of food that has to be prepared and microwaved, time consuming. I figure I will wait since it will take longer to go to another store. The 3rd customer, a thai also, is sort of cueing up behind me. When this first girl gets her large time consuming order done, the check out girl looks up and calls the Thai standing behind me to the closed section of the coutner and proceeds to wait on him. I as her, in Thai, if she didn't notice that I was first. She said yes, sorry, and proceed with the guys checkout with his many items. Never looked up again untill it was "my turn"

Today I am in Lotus in the 10 item only line. Rarely, when some has many more items, they tell them to go to a different line. Today, as happened many times before, the lady in front of me has maybe 20 items. She puts the first ten on the line, pays for them, and puts them in her cart. She then takes out the next 10 and does this order. Pretty amazing, I wonder if she thinks that is fair since she is only buying 10 at a time or that we are just stupid. Funny.

In the nine or so years of my time spent in Thailand that has never happened to me in a 7-11? You didn't have you invisibility suite on did you :)

Only ever happened to me once but then I have wide shoulders and know how to use them!

The one time somebody jumped the queue I put my things down on the counter and said that I would them get them next time.

Happened almost exactly like that to me last Friday.

what is more common is to have 4 people standing behind the counter, but only one working......

Sometime some ones try but i normally just go ahead of them and let them me there is a queue :D .

But if the clerk caused the problem them I just put all the stuff I am trying to buy in front of him/her and walk out of store without buying. There is always another store within few steps anyways :)

so what??

so what??

Its extremely bad manners, pushing in !!!

When Thai's try it with me, the assistant knows by my angry expression, and turns to serve me first.

That is a typical situation when the word farang gets an insult.

Never happened to me in Thailand in 19 years, ooops tell a lie, a Farang dived in front of me and said he was in a hurry, a taxi was waiting, I said, " Ok mate, carry on and have a safe journey ".

I never slept for 3 weeks after that horrendous experience. :)

Maybe queue jumping is working out of the same rule as on the roads.

If you leave space infront of you, you must accept that someone will squeeze in.

Kind of unwritten rule that most drivers follow.

No problem really. Just make sure one is vigilant, and dont leave too much space.

Same goes in the queues in the shops.

Make sure you dont leave any space for anyone to squeeze infront of you.

If someone approach the queue, move forward, and act like you kindly allow the person to pass behind you.

If someone behind you is called to the counter, you move forward and smile, as you say "my turn, yes"?

And a big smile of course when you place your items on the counter.

Easy, and everybody save face.

:)

Almost 10 years here now, and I think maybe 1 or 2 times only that I have been passed in the queue.

That would only happen to me once. I would let them ring up my items on the till and then walk out without them and without paying. Let the teller figure it out. There is nothing I need that badly that I can't walk away from.

the check out girl looks up and calls the Thai standing behind me to the closed section of the coutner and proceeds to wait on him.

I have only ever had this happen to me once, and it was at a 7-11 in Pattaya. When the cashier started to help the person who was behind me, I calmly set the bottle on the counter and walked out of the store. There is a 7-11 on almost every corner, so I just walked down to the next one.

Annoyingly, this has happened to me on several occasions. I usually pick their stuff up and hand it back to them. In general, it is usually Indians who have done this, but the occasional Thai. It happens less now.

On a related note, I was at a food court and was starting to place my order when three Thai women came up and started ordering as I was pointing to what I wanted. The staff behind the counter continued to fill my order, which was met with a barrage of abuse from one of the women berating him for serving me before them. Without even looking at them, I thanked the server in Thai, remarked how he was very polite, but some people who I have met in Thailand have no manners and should learn how to behave. I then turned to the ladies and told them good luck and walked away with my food. They had nothing to say after that.

Try going outside.

Edit- Just to contribute a story: Was driving down Asok and about to turn into a building when some hi-so Thai lady in a Lexus GX tries to rush ahead to beat me into the parking lot. The catch was that she was driving down the wrong side of the road (towards me) on <deleted> Asok and she was yapping on her cell phone. Threw me a nasty glare too when she was forced to an abrupt halt after realizing she'd slam into the side of my car if she continued, as if I was supposed to stop and wait for her. Gotta love how things work here sometimes. :D

That's a pretty good idea actually! Thanks for the tip.

Luckily, I am quite tall - 6'5'' - so I have never had this problem, but, having said that, I do give many folks with one or two items only,

a free pass - OK, OK - they have to be young and very cute, otherwise they can pound sand, wait in line like the rest of us.

Of course they all thank me profusely which leads to all kinds of conversation, dates, wild trysts, etc, which is what life is all about.

But I guess if y'all gonna stand around like a 'whole bunch of cows' whinging and whining about even the smallest social transgression,

you aint never gonna get noticed, let alone any of the free nookie. Besides - whats the hurry, Jack? Where ya going?

Down to the free, public library to see if your card has expired? Off to ya local Internet Cafe, where you can recall, for eternity and

all to see, all the terrible trials & tribulations of standing in line at Tesco, with a single bar of cheap soap, waiting for God?!

You will be absolutely blown away by how many wonderful, beautiful people are out there, ready to enrich your world - give them a chance.

Perhaps it is not only the invisible suit that burns ya, but indeed the anti-personnel barrier, the 'Oh woe is me' attitude - like the old dudes

back home, who always run their carts into your ankles, who know ya not gonna slap them, or is it that snail pace that tells everyone that

ya have nothing to do and the whole day to do it in?!

I usually ask the queue jumper, " Do you have any manners? Please wait in the queue." In Thai, of course.

This seems to work, and I get smiles of appreciation from others in the queue.

Do you get funny looks if you do this to a farrang queue jumper? :)
