Toll Way - Taxi

Featured Replies

I have experienced this issues many times now .Every time i take a take i ask them to take the toll way , i try and tell them in thai too " pai expressway ka or pai toll way ka" but they hardly understand .

They understand the rest of my thai properly

Is there any other way that i can tell them about this ? :)

The Thai word for expressway is "tang duan". Most taxi drivers don't know expressway or tollway. So "pai tang duan" will work, or even better "yak pai tang duan" (I want to go by expressway).

Hope this helps!

I agree. Use the Thai word. I always have and it has never failed me.

I have more of a problem to tell them not to take the tollway they love the tollway because its usually faster and longer ride for them. So more money in a shorter time. They even want to take them when its not busy.

What problem? They ask you express way or not? And you answer.

I live in Bangkok.

I use taxis each and every day.

2-4 times, each day.

Normally they will go for the longest route (in Kilometers, NOT in time of course), and avoid the highways. If they know English they ask if I want to take the highway/tollway.

If they dont say anything, then I will tell them, in English, highway (or toll way), and then the name of the that particular road if I remember it.

Never really been any big problems regarding that.

Of course, the occasional, sorry I drove the wrong way happens, but I understand that this is sometimes part of the game.

No they push you to take the expressway and moan and groan if you dont agree with it.

Anyway in general i have good experiences with taxis but as with all jobs there is a certain percentage rip offs.

Just an example of one of the rip offs. Going from suan poo (immigration) to nana. Raining hard i get in with my wife before he said meter once we get in.. 150 bath or else.. Of course i dont like that and just step out in the rain and take an other taxi. The moment i step out he wanted to turn his meter on again.. But of course i dont go back. Its not about the money its that i just hate scams like that. In the end the fair was 75bt.

But like i said mostly i dont have any problems with them and the example and the ones i was talking about who like to take the long way and express way just for the money are a minority.

Same with me.

My bf & I got a taxi last trip and it was 1am. The driver didn't even ask if we wanted to go tollway.

Most taxis just assume that we are farang (bf Thai but doesn't look Thai) and want to get home fast.

Got home and bf told him he is not getting full tips because he spent it on tollways.

Just to add the radio was blasting with Thai country music and he was also moving around in his chair to stay awake.

Not a good time to get a taxi.
