Hi, You have a few choices

1 take the bus and ferry from Khoa San Rd 12- 14 hours 1000 - 1200 baht

2 Take the train to Chumphon and the ferry to Samui 12 - 14 hours 1000 - 1200 baht

3 Fly from Swamoy to samui 45 50 minutes 3000 - 4,500 baht

My favorite was always the train and ferry. I do not like the buses as they are driven by lunatics who beleve they are Michael Shcumaker! :)

Hi we are trying to find the best and cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Sumai, any help would be appreciated? thank you

Bangkok airways flights about every hour cheapest about 2000 baht

or Air Asia to Surat Thani less than half then take the ferry.

NB :)

If you are willing to fly early morning, the first flight (approx 6am) is usually 2000 baht one way. The last flight of the day (approx 11am) is also 2000 baht. By far the quickest and easiest way to go.

The first time I travelled in Thailand, I took a ferry/large boat from Surat Thani to Na Thon. It was rather overloaded IIRC, thankfully the sea was like a millpond but wouldn't have fancied it in rougher weather. However I believe there are "proper" car ferries that also do the run.

Regarding the buses from Khao San area, it's not unknown for belongings to go missing on these, so be careful. Don't bother booking a return fare either, it won't happen!

If you take the train .... you still have to take a bus to the ferry which is at the very least a 30 minute ride on the heels of the long train ride. Too many steps and too long in total.

Either take the bus or fly. Forget the train.

Best way for a financial moderate travel freak is by train 2nd class sleeper a/c. The bus ride Surath Thani - Don Sak lasts 1 hour, then 1,5 hrs by ferry to Nathon and than 40 minutes to Chaweng or Lamai. But, as I said, that's for a travel freak. Otherwise I would fly.

Train is much better than bus. Done all that countless times in my youth.

Just did Samui last week. Flew to Surat Thani airport from Bangkok with Air Asia and we were delayed 1 hour from Swampy (flight took

1 hour 10mins) then caught the bus to Taton Pier (1 hour 30mins) and then the car ferry with around 300 people (1 hour 30 mins). Got picked up from the pier and transfered to the hotel. (only 20 mins as we did not stay in the tourist areas of Lamai or CW). The trip was long but enjoyable if you like travelling and have plenty of time. For short trips of less than 3 nights I would fly directly into Samui with Bangkok Airways or Thai International. As a side note we enjoyed Kho Samet much more due to the shorter distance from bangkok and not as crowded as Samui.
