EC certifies Thani Thaugsuban as Surat Thani MP

BANGKOK, 8 September 2009 (NNT) - The Election Commission (EC) has endorsed the election of the candidate from the Democrat Party, Mr Thani Thaugsuban, as the MP for Constituency 1 of Surat Thani province.

EC Secretary-General Suthipol Taweechaikarn stated that Mr Thani had been certified by the commission as the new MP for Constituency 1 of Surat Thani following his victory in the by-election on 30 August, citing that no complaints or electoral frauds were reported. The by-election came after Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban was found guilty of breaching the Constitution by holding shares in companies linked to media and state concessions and tendered his resignation from the MP seat. As a result, Mr Thani, the Deputy Prime Minister’s brother, pulled off a landslide victory over the candidate from the opposition Puea Thai Party, Mr Sompol Vichaidit.

In addition, Mr Suthipol said the EC was tentatively scheduled to deliberate on the shareholding case of 44 MPs on 9 September. However, he admitted that the commission was uncertain whether it would be able to carry out the voting session as Election Commissioner Praphan Naigowit was on a sick leave during 7 to 8 September.

i thought the configuration that a Deputy Prime Minister lost his seat in the parliament because he was found guilty of breaching the constitution and in the resulting by-election is won in a landslide by nobody else than the brother of the dismissed MP would be good for some hot discussion by the political experts on thaivisaforum.
