If I am in the wrong visa section Mods pls. move it

My wife is an Australian PR and her visa lasts to 2011 she has been away from Australia now for 2 years

The question I like to ask is, can she stay outside of Australia till 2011 or will she lose her PR?

If she travels back to Australia now after 2 years does she need a re-entry visa or only after her PR expireds? I have heard today if you leave Australia for more than 2 or 3 years you will loose your

PR status. Is there any trues in it ?

Thanks for any information

This is from a non Government site but pretty much reflects what I have heard......Hope it assists, Perhaps a letter to Immigration will fill in the missing bits you have asked about

Australian permanent residents are residents of Australia who hold permanent residency visas but are not citizens of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Holders of permanent residency visas may remain in Australia indefinitely. A 5-year initial visa, which corresponds to the underlying migration scheme, is granted alongside the permanent residency. Until the initial visa expires, the visa holder may leave and re-enter Australia freely. A notable feature of the permanent residency visa is that, even after the initial visa expires, the holder is entitled to stay in Australia indefinitely without breaching immigration regulations.[1]

After the initial visa expires, if the holder wishes to continue to travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident, they must obtain a Resident Return Visa (RRV). [2]However those who live for too long outside Australia may lose their permanent resident status.

Thank you very much for your information This is exactly what I was being told before we came out here but as you know the rules changes very often so just to double check I will get in contact with the Australian embassy over here

Thanks again

Hi wee have recently walked this path, my Thai wife of 14 years has always had a Aussie PR visa, while living in Thailand she missed the 2 years out of 5 for her second PR Visa, we applied to the Aussie embassy in Bangkok and they knocked us back stating that she was in Thailand more then Australia which was correct, we then resubmitted the request for the PR visa and included letters from our children and also supporting letters from myself amd my family in Australia, we were granted the visa and interestingly enough my wife has been granted Aussie Citizenship as the Australian Immigration in Australia ccccould see that we moved to Thailand as a family and that our business was a family busines and that we were still paying taxes in Aus, so once again it appears to be a case by case situation.
