I read with concern that there is worm called "Cornficker' that is currently supposedly spreading across the globe.

Could somebody with more expertise please explain what it is and is it a real threat.

I am just an old bloke who's reasonably worldly but a bit "I.T." challenged. I certainly don't want to be seen as an alarmist but having read a press report am seeking a little more enlightenment and is there any action I should be taking.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi

Conficker is a computer worm which is targeting MS Windows OS. It uses flaws in Windows software and link the infected machines into a virtual computer that can be commanded remotely by its authors.

It uses a combination of advanced malware techniques which has made it difficult to counter.

Conficker has spread rapidly into what is now believed to be the largest computer worm infection. It is beleived that it has more than ten million computers now under its control including government, business and home computers .

Here is the link from Microsoft for more information and to protect yourself
