Hi

My wifes mother was issued a family visit visa on 6th May 2009. Due to illness she was unable to travel but now she is well again.

The visa was for 6 monts.

My question is can she still travel to the UK until 5th November 2009 and then stay for a couplr of weeks or must she leave the UK by 5th November 2009 when the visa expires.

I am not sure so will not book a flight until I have a firm answer. She may need to make another application if she needs to leav ethe UK by the visa expiry date.

Thanks in advance.

Unless you requested differently at the time of application the visa will be valid for 6 months from the date of issue. She can enter the UK at any time before the expiry date, but must leave the UK on or before that date.

Therefore, if the expiry date is 5th November and she wishes to stay beyond that date then she will need to apply for a new visa.

Supply the same evidence as before and explain why she did not use the previous visa.

check with the British embassy as it was my thinking that the visa started when you entered the uk and could stay up to six months . You have to use the visa within the time said reason behind this is circumstances may change i.e. you have no dosh

This used to be the case, but the rules were changed a few years ago and now the visa starts on the date it was issued unless the applicant requests a later start date (up to three months ahead).
