I have heard that the New Year's fireworks along the river are specatacular, as the hotel's try to out do each other. Is it worth planning New Years around?

Which side of the river would give the best view and at what location?

[The photo is from the Millenium Hilton thanks to 'Sonny's' Panorama post on Google Earth.] Think that is the Taksin Bridge in back ground?

early WARNING - AVOID OVER CROWDED CLUBS WITH LOCKED EXITS [remember the pictures of the charred bodies last year?]

I live near the river and can see fireworks from the hotels most any night of the week. I would not say the hotels try to out do each other on New Year's but several do fireworks. The best place would be in one of the hotels to view, though you will pay a pretty penny for this. Some of the smaller restaurants are a good option such as "Be My Guest" which is next to the Millenium or "Arun Residence" though it looks towards Wat Arun. The big fireworks are over the Taksin Bridge as in the picture so the Peninsula Hotel, Shangrila, Sheraton or even the Oriental are good options. Maybe book a room at one of the hotels overlooking the bridge and have a party in your room?
