For those who are not British, an MBE award is one of the highest distinctions that can be gained by a British citizen, and as you may have guessed, one of our British expats in Pattaya, Mr. Derek McCarrick (MBE), has recently won this prestigious English citation.

Tuesday 6th October 2009 [PDN]: - Born in UK in 1935, Mr. Derek McCarrick grew up in England and always was sports minded, keeping himself quite fit. His interest has been in marathon running, but with one huge difference; - Derek runs in a fluffy pink rabbit suit to raise money for charitable institutions.

Derek McCarrick migrated to Thailand in 2002, and resides at Naklua in Pattaya, but everyone in Pattaya will remember him as “Roger Rabbit,” who runs in all of our marathons. He usually runs the “half marathons’ dressed in his very hot rabbit costume, which is a considerable effort considering the heat that it must trap inside, and at the age of 74-years, this is an incredible physical effort for Derek.

In April 2009 Derek ran the London Marathon” and one month ago in September 2009, he was in the UK to run the “Half” Great Northern Marathon, all in the name of charity. Over the years it would be difficult to estimate how much Derek McCarrick (MBE) has raised for a multitude of charitable organizations, but it would probably run into millions of dollars, from events that he has ran in many different countries.

So what do you do when you are told that you have been given an MBE from the Queen of England? Apart from celebrating this coveted achievement, you are given an appointment to appear at Buckingham Palace in London, and personally receive your MBE award from none other than “Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II.” Dress code was very formal with Derek wearing a long tailed suit and top hat, and his family members being similarly attired in equally fine apparel.

Derek jokingly remarked that the hire of the suit cost him 100-pounds sterling for the occasion, but our Pattaya expat Mr. Derek McCarrick (MBE) has paid for his prestigious award in through his own efforts and the will to carry on over many decades, when other men would have given up.

Comment: - Pattaya Daily News congratulates Derek McCarrick (MBE), for his outstanding efforts in supporting underprivileged people around the world, with his super human achievements; - Your MBE award has been well deserved.
