Online Games Or Quizes To Learn Thai?

Featured Replies

Anyone know of anything like online games or quizzes to learn Thai?

Things like they say a word in Thai and you have to click on the English word that means the same?

Or multiple choice type questions?

Thanks.

You can easily make your own if you have a basic beginners book by downloading the free ANKI software (just google 'ANKI') and making your own 'flashcards'. The software will then randomly show you one side of the card (either the Thai, the English, or randomly either, up to you) and you click when you think you've got the answer. You can then click a button to rate how hard it was, and the software will show you that card again either sooner or later according to your answer. Once you've made your cards, all you need to do is about ten minutes review per day and you'll soon find the language sticking in your head. It is really a very effective (and free) piece of kit.

The website Learning Thai dot com; (www.learningthai.com) has hundreds of word order quizzes, crossword puzzles with the clues in thai and the answers typed in english.

Another site which is really good is; the TCU (Thailand Cyber University) here;

http://202.29.13.94/courseware/ (although I think on another thread the correct website is listed). This site has lessons with matching, drag and drop stuff and is especially good for a free online teaching aid.

One I used when I was started learning to read is a site developed by the Department of Non-Formal Education called; Thai Language e-Learning; www.teachthai.com. It goes over the alphabet, vowels, toning, consonant class, has testing, reading examples, etc.

Also several people on this language forum have made decks of online flashcards which they share. Look for the flashcard posts.

Hope this helps. ...

E-learning - http://www.dekgeng.com/thai/index.html

Very simple Thai - http://www.genkithai.com/

Again, basic Thai - http://www.digitaldialects.com/Thai.htm

Quizzes to go with Thai for Beginners - http://www.thaiforbeginners.com/

And I believe the Thai government site also has quizzes - http://www.teachthai.com/

Byki is my quiz software of choice. It is similar to Anki but has more to offer (games, activities, etc). Also, it has quite a few Thai word/phrases in their free download (just be careful as a few are incorrect). I don't use their stuff as I put my own sound and Thai in (that way I control what I'm learning) - http://www.byki.com/fls/free-thai-software...oad.html?l=thai

Desi, I tried Byki, but as far as I can figure out you can't make your own cards unless you pay. Is that right (or did I miss something)?

I found the free version to be practically useless, whereas the Anki software while not as pretty, is fully functional and doesn't cost you a baht!

That's correct, you do have to pay to be able to create your own but it's not very expensive (not for what it is). And while Anki is free (unless I am missing something) it only has one activity - flashcards. Byki has many different activities to keep you from being bored. I'm 'ok' learning with flashcards, but I've found that I pick up additional words using the different activities. Words that I can't get to link into my head any other way.

Found an interactive site based on flash files (swfs) to learn Thai. Not exactly games, but interactive style. You can check it out here.

http://www.thaicyberu.go.th/

Thai Cyber University

You can register for a Thai course module there, and thereafter you are able to view Adobe Flash files to learn basic Thai. Useful for beginners as it includes phrases, rules, consonants and vowels etc.

Steps: (Note that I tried this on Firefox, if on Safari or Opera or other browsers might not work as it might appear all in Thai.)

1. Register

2. Login

3. Under Menu, choose Course -> Self Paced Learning Course

4. Search for Course ID "TCU-2549052" (Copy and Paste)

5. Click on the course (popup will appear)

6. Click Register.

7. Go back to the menus again, and select "Classroom" now.

8. Click "Enter" Class

9. Select a Chapter that interests you.

10. Ta-dah!

First few steps are a hassle, but you get lots of cool steps afterwards. Cool resource.

If you are tech savvy, you can actually find the root swfs and save them down into to your computer, in addition to the pdfs available. Thus you don't need to be online to view them.

Sorry tod-daniels for the repeat post on TCU; didn't see it. Apologies! In fact your method is much easier and does away with the hassle of registration and what not! Thanks!
