How much time do you have?

I am traveling in the opposite direction next week and decided on going over land. Buses or train from Bangkok to Vientianne (via Chiang Mai in my case) then bus from Vientianne to Kunming. Bit of a journey and will take a couple of days but if you're not on a time schedule it will definitely work out cheaper than a flight.

Plus you get to see quite a bit in between and have the option of stopping on route. No good if you're in a hurry though, obviously.

If you are in a hurry my advice would be to try Air China or China Eastern. They have offices in Bangkok and quoted me reasonable prices from Bangkok to Beijing (not the same place, I know, but they go to/from Kunming as well).

P.S if you are coming from Kunming any recommendations of hostels/cheapish hotels?

Brightside

""Buses or train from Bangkok to Vientianne (via Chiang Mai in my case) then bus from Vientianne to Kunming."

Trying to figure out your routing here. How does C. Mai fit into the schedule?

FYI, if heading north from Vientiane to LP, then Pak Mong, the road is good. But take a look at the url below for road conditions if you're heading west from there to Oudom Xay to catch a road north to China.

Mac,

Chiang Mai fits into the schedule simply because I want to go there. I realize it is a good couple of hundred miles out of the way. It's just a personal travel plan. Obviously it would be far quicker to go straight from BKK to Laos (or vice-versa), I guess it just depends what you wanna see along the way.
