Police clamp down on water pistols

CHIANG MAI: -- In preparations for the forthcoming Songkran festival next month, police officers in Thailand's northern region are starting a war on high pressure water pistols.

As the nation gears up for the annual Songkran New Year festival, in which revellers hurl and squirt water at each other, shops are filled with water pistols of every size and description.

But for Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanuphong Singra Na Ayutthaya, the Commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 5, the water guns are a dangerous menace.

Although officers will be on the lookout for drugs and real weapons during the Songkran period, officers have also been instructed to arrest anyone carrying the high pressure water guns, as the guns can cause injuries.

The Provincial Police Region 5 will also mobilize a force of 12,000 over the Songkran festival in an attempt to reduce traffic fatalities by 30 percent and ensure that tourists have a good time.

Last year 64 people were killed in the region's roads during the Songkran period.

Arrest all of them who carry the water guns, leave those with the real guns alone. :o
