Residents of Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi warned of flash floods

BANGKOK: -- The Meteorological Department Tuesday warned residents of Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi to brace themselves against heavy rains and possible flash floods.

In its daily forecast issued at 4 am, the department said the low pressure mass over lower Central, upper South would trigger heavy rains in central, eastern and upper southern provinces, especially the three provinces.

About 70 per cent of Bangkok areas would have rains, it said.

Phitsanulok declares a district disaster zone

PHITSANULOK: -- Flood-hit Phitsanulok in northern Thailand on Tuesday announced Bang Rakam district a disaster zone as flash floods continued to damage farmland in Si Sa Ket province in the Northeast.

Floodwaters in Bang Rakam district remained dramatically high as the water level in the Yom River exceeds the critical point of one metre.

Continuous water run-off from nearby Sukhothai, Phrae and Kamphaeng Phet provinces boosted the floodwater level in Bang Rakam and flooded eight more nearby subdistricts.

Nearly 40,000 rais (about 15,800 acres) of paddy fields were submerged and damaged while residents busily moved their belongings and livestock to higher ground, according to Phitsanulok Governor Preecha Ruangchan.

In the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket, residents in Sila Lat district have suffered floods as high as one metre while some 2,000 rais (about 800 acres) of paddy fields in two subdistricts have been entirely destroyed.

A provincial irrigation team has drained water out of the affected areas and planned to build dykes to prevent water from flowing into agricultural areas.

Si Sa Ket was affected earlier by tropical storm Ketsana and floods have affected some 69,000 households in 19 districts and damaged farmlands and agricultural areas.

It would be good to have some rain in Kan at last - we're still watering the garden!

Agreed, compared to previous years we seem to have had much less rainfall this rainy season.

I'm having to water the garden regularly too which is unheard of this time of year.

What part of Kan are you in?? In Ladya we have had heavy rain nearly every day for a while.

About 35 km's north of Kan on the Suphanburi road, small village called Don Tao It.

It's frustrating because about a month and a half ago we put down about 2000 sq metres of turf in our new garden hoping to take advantage of the rainy season and until the last week have had to water it just about every day.

Oh well, at least the village water is cheap.
