For example in Japan if I want a motherboard I can select from perhaps 50 or so in one store. In the USA I can buy the latest high capacity disk drives or the new soon to be announced Mac Mini.

In general, low to mid range components are comparably priced with European prices (which are slightly higher then USA prices).

But, when going top end, firstly it'll be hard to find and secondly it'll be very expensive. The market for top range stuff is very small in Thailand.

Brandname stuff such as anything Apple entirely depends on Apple's policy on when to sell in Thailand. You can ofen buy before the offical release dates, but this is gray import, often with high prices and warranty issues.
