New To ADSL

Featured Replies

I have just had ADSL set up in my home here in Samui.

TOT 1024/256 Unlimited for 1000 bht a month.

Downloading at around 125 kbps.

The modem they gave me is a ZyXel prestige 630-C?

This cost 1600 bht, I know there are lots of different modems

on the market, at different prices.

Can someone give me some basic knowledge on what the

differences are with these modems as I don't now whether mine

is any good and doing what it's meant to do.

Also is my security on the internet at risk more, by using ASDL

rather than a phone line.

Sorry for the basic questions. This is my first day using this on my

notebook.

Thankyou

If yer only planning on using the connection for one computer the kit they gave you will do fine. Yer security is @ the same risk as with a normal 56k modem - though because ADSL is an "always on" connection yer exposure to that risk is likely to be greater than before.

Unless security is a high priority for whatever you use yer computer for, a software firewall will suffice :o

The Zyxel modem is perfectly suited for the job if you only want to hook up 1 PC. Also it doesn't need the sometimes complex port forwarding settings for your Morpheus or bittorent programs... Can't get it more easy :D

Your security is only more at risk because of the system being online all the time.

Minimum requirements would be to activate the Windows firewall, install Microsofts antispyware program, and an antivirus program. Anything less is looking for trouble :o

Installing the free (and good) zonealarm firewall is even better.

Look at the sticky in this forum concerning secuity for lots of tips...

Thanks for the relpies, yes I already have zonealarm, spybot

and ad-aware etc.

Thanks again

Remember that having the adsl connection "Always-On" is not compulsory. You can disconnect if you want....

Agree with what others have said. The ZYXEL modem will certainly be fine, and all you need is to install the appropriate security softwares. As a precautionary measure, do not stay connected all the time if you do not have to.

Since you are in Samui, just for curiosity, could you indicate:

1. Is TOT the only ADSL service provider in Samui?

2. In which part of Samui do you live (where you have your ADSL line)?

3. How do you rate the ADSL service that you have, so far?

I think there is JI-Net aswell here, I havn't seen True here yet.

I'm situated in the chewang are, and so far so good with the ADSL.

Samui is abit behind with ADSL for home users, the man from TOT

said they have only 70 places for ADSL for home users in Samui??

I know alot of people are on the waiting list, like I was. But a couple of days

ago they came to check the line and I was suprised when they said the next day

I could have it. :o

I've noticed that in the past 24 hours my zonealarm has blocked

550 odd intrusions to my computer of which 10 were high risk.

Before when on dial-up there were roughly 8-10 a day.

Can you tell me if this amount of intrusions is normal?

Thanks

I suggest you add a virus checker like AVG from Grisoft.com

Noodles

Many times zone alarm reports an intrusion when in fact it is just a ping from your isp. The isp will do this to confirm that you are still connected after a period of inactivity to see if they can reclaim the ip address.

They would not get any joy out of me as I block pings,

as many isp's do now!!

Pinging is a useful way to find out what ip addresses are in use, and could be hacked!!

Check your Zonelarm settings, and Router settings to see how to turn of

response to a ping.

It must be blocked already as I'm not getting any pings.

I just noticed the increase in attemps of access.

thanks for the info :o

I suspect you are using ADSL a lot more than a dial up so you are probably hitting more sites that are in turn hitting you. If we worry about attacks we would never go online - just make sure you keep firewall turned on and scan on a regular basis.

If you have another computer on you can use network to have ADSL usage for both without need for external router - but primary will have to remain on.

Be careful on this point.

Several Thai ISP state that only one computer can be connected at one time,

a contractual requirement!!

With a router and Network Address Translation (NAT) working the cannot tell how many

machines are connected
