Australian Aged Pension

Recommended Posts

I turned 65 on the 3rd Oct 2009 and have been working in Thailand since 2002 (made redundent Feb 2009)

I have pemanent residency status in Australia arriving from Scotland in 1951 and have payed Taxes for

40+years and returning to Australia on a yearly basis to visit my Family during my seven years in Thailand

on returning to Australia in Sept. 2009 to claim the Single Aged pension, there was no issue with the claim,

But when I informed C/Link there was a need for me to visit a sick friend in Thailand.

I was told my pension would be suspended as I was deamed as an Expat. and was required to stay

in Australia for 2 years to recieve the Aged Pension if traveling over seas.

I was also informed I could appeal against this decision, in which I intend to do, is there anyone out there

who has faced this same situation, and what advice can you give to lodge an appeal.

Regards Bob.

Pretty pathetic, you paid taxes so you should be entitled to a pension. The arrogance and stupidity of government is amazing sometimes.

The Age pension in Australia does not depend whether you have paid tax or not..it is not based on any tax paid. It is based on the age and residency. Anyone who have lived outside Australia for long time cannot just come back and claim the Age pension immediately especially if that person is not Australian Citizen. Centre Link has a book explaining when and how the Age pension can be claimed.

I will be facing the same situation as you are in now that is the reason I am going back to

Oz now 3 years prior to applying for my pension and yes I am australian citicen and worked for more

than 35 years also including running my own business for over 20 years. I don't have any answers for

you now but if I find out more on return to OZ I will let you know.

Cheers

Sorry, there is no answer, if you have been out of Australia for a "long period" without any real ties, yearly visits back, real estate, health insurance, tax returns each year, bank accounts etc etc you will more than likely be deemed a "former resident" and subject to the 2 year rule. While ever you are in Australia and if entitled to a pension it will be paid to you - must if deemed as a former resident you need to spend 2 years in Aust. before any pension is transportable off-shore.

Sure you can protest it but you need a good case to change the ruling. This subject was discused at length in an earlier post - worth checking back and reading it.

So here is a silly question just for example I do get my pension and I like to go back to Thailand for a while for what ever reason how does center link know I am outsite of Australia if I don't tell them?

An Aussie told me today the government had increased the eligibile pension age from 65 to 67!

Does anyone know if that's true?

I'm 64 +4 months. turn 65 next June..

I've been in LOS since December 2008. Returned for 2 weeks in March this year.

What are my chances of getting a pension?

I don't want/can't go back to my old job for health reasons.

Will it help my chances if I go back a few times before next June.

(assuming the news about 67 above is not true).

Another problem is I don't have any real evidence of my medical condition apart from a

few visits to my GP in Oz.

I just felt I couldn't do that job any more and packed up and left.

I went to the doc a few times but didn't get a diagnosis but I

suspect it's a combination of things brought on by stress.

Burnout comes to mind.

Just worrying about my pension makes me depressed.

I need to earn some more money real soon as the savings are nearly mot leo.

It costs me a lot to keep myself and the Thai family in comfort.

A pension would make a world of difference.

You might get away with it, but as pointed out all there is provision to monitor your movements in and out of the country - don't know what will happen if you get sprung not telling - maybe a big slap on the wrist and your 2 year period will re-commence.

Are we starting an additional Oz Pension thread in addition to the Pinned Topic?

it looks like it,perhaps it can be merged.to fred, good luck,it looks like the 2 year qualifying period is set in concrete for now.2 years back in australia sounds like pergatory to me after the life in thailand, not withstanding the good weather and good beer.but oh you'd miss the ladies here,no!
