November 3, 200916 yr Photographers,Whats your take on insurance coverage for your camera gear in Thailand? Who do you use?, what type of insurance cover is it? Is it covered outside the home? Any tips on this issue would be appreciated. I am working on this right now, although I intend to only insure my Canon EOS 50D. It appears that I can cover it with a separate rider, but that it only insures it against forcible robbery. I will tell you more within the next few days.
November 3, 200916 yr Author Thanks phet, I came here first before picking up the telephone, I was imaging the pain I would go though, "You want to insure a what?"
November 4, 200916 yr It appears that I can cover it with a separate rider, but that it only insures it against forcible robbery. I've also contemplated insuring my camera and lenses years ago (when 5D was still so expensive!). I don't remember the figures, but on top of the above, both the premium and deductible were high that I figured in the end it's not worth it. Same goes for laptop, I think.
November 4, 200916 yr Author ^so im gathering most of you then just have the gear covered under your home policies for theft or loss due to fire etc?
November 4, 200916 yr ^so im gathering most of you then just have the gear covered under your home policies for theft or loss due to fire etc? Our home property insurance doesn't cover camera, not even with added premium.
November 4, 200916 yr Author This is what I love about Thailand, the basics, they are just so easy to acheive good lord help me
November 6, 200916 yr I investigated this aspect a few years ago I got all the usual bulls**t "Yes Sir, rest assured you're fully covered" - when I asked for a specimen of the policy wording all went quiet! My main concern at the time was all risks cover whilst I was traveling the Country - it wasn't available and I left it at that. However, cover for theft (violent and forcible entry clause) and accidental damage in the home was available - if this is adequate. But I wouldn't bank on a successful claim outcome - and there's no Ombudsman over here to intervene! For me, All Risks was critical and still is - damage/loss/theft OUTSIDE my home is what I sought the most - no luck! In the UK it was merely an extension to your home insurance with a detailed itinerary and receipts for evidence. But if you have any luck - please share.
November 7, 200916 yr Author I'm going to chase a contact next week, other than that, I give up. If I cant get it outside the home, sobeit, but i want a house policy with specific contents listed on it, the notebook and a few other things should be on it as well, right?
November 7, 200916 yr but i want a house policy with specific contents listed on it, the notebook and a few other things should be on it as well, right? What to include...that's the big question. I think people tend to overdo it with insurance. My laptop is a bit old, but it something happened to it I can easily afford another. Same with my backup digital camera. My primary digital camera and my main computer...that's getting a little steep, and is why I want to insure them.
November 8, 200916 yr Author I agree totally with you phetaroi, I just want cover for the decent stuff, the stuff I would be bothered to replace.
November 8, 200916 yr I tried to get insurance in the UK a few years ago (lived in Vietnam at the time where I did not even have household insurance). Apart from camera gear, I also wanted to insure scope and bins (bird watcher). Premiums were so high, and there were so many clauses in favor of the insurance company, that I passed. But if things have changed, please do let us know.
January 10, 201016 yr MSIG personal belongings insurance covers camera gear both in the home and outside anywhere in the world. I've used it for 10 years or more (or the policy of the companies they took over, CGU, Commercial Union, etc). The rate, as far as I remember, is 2% of value per annum.
January 11, 201016 yr Photographic fans do not feel left out, Thai Visa can offer policies to cover cameras outside the home as part of the home policy. Please contact us with your details Here
