Fugitive wanted for Internet investment fraud nabbed in Thailand

BANGKOK: -- An alleged US Internet scammer has been arrested in a luxury coastal resort in Thailand.

Eugene Carriere, 55, is wanted by the FBI for allegedly scamming internet investors out of millions of dollars.

He was arrested late Thursday at his residence in Pattaya, about a year after he entered Thailand on what's claimed to be a fake passport. According to the FBI, Carriere and James Eberhart operated a telemarketing outfit in California called YES Entertainment, which defrauded website investors out of over 11 million dollars in 1999.

The firm claimed that it was developing an internet website with video channel service and promised returns to over 800 investors in the United States.

Most of the cash was transferred to offshore bank accounts in Hong Kong and Singapore and no one got a cent. The Feds still have not found Eberhart.

Thai police say Eugene Marcel Carriere (KAH'-ree-air) was arrested yesterday in the resort town of Pattaya (pah-THAI-yah) on illegal entry charges. He'll be deported to the United States next week.

The F-B-I says Carriere and an associate owned a telemarketing company in Orange and L-A counties that defrauded investors out of more than 11 (m) million dollars. The men claimed to investors they were developing a multimedia Web site offering several channels of video programming, but it never developed.

The scheme occurred in 1999, the same year Carriere fled the country.

In 2002, a federal court in Los Angeles indicted him and his associate on multiple charges of mail fraud and money laundering.

I didn't catch that first time the story came around. If Pattaya is luxury I wonder where the author usually goes on holiday ... Afghanistan?
