November 7, 200916 yr I am currently considering buying a new pair of eye glasses. As I require quite strong lenses I would prefer to have the lightweight high index lenses. I have inquired at a few outlets in Pattaya and usually get the no have answer, in some cases just a blank look. I also took advantage of the free computer vision check, I don't know how well trained these people are but I got different reading from several shops. Makes one wonder. They only seem interested to sell you a pair of new frames without really listening to your requests about different lenses. has anyone had the good fortune to find a good optician in Pattaya who is sympathetic to your lenses requests. I'm not interested in the buy one, get one free sales pitch. Just a good reliable conscientious optician. Cheers
November 7, 200916 yr Try out the progressive lens specialist place across from Royal Garden Mall (and a bit north). Their exams were very thorough, much more than a quick computer scan. I think they likely can offer you the type of lens you require. I used them for progressive lenses and they even indulged me in a complete second exam to confirm the results of the first exam. November 7, 200916 yr There is an optical shop called Lens and Time in the new Central Mall. The manager is named Beer and he is a good guy and knowledgeable. I just got my high index lenses there for 2500 baht. Nice selection of frames as well.
November 8, 200916 yr Sorry, a little bit off-topic but does anyone know where I can get some spectacle lenses re-coated? I don't need new frames and the lens prescription is still OK for me but the anti-scratch coating on the lenses has started to come away as it was obviously not applied correctly in the first place. Expensive, vari-focal, progressive lenses (from UK) so I don't really want to throw them away if I can get them re-coated at a reasonable price. DM
November 8, 200916 yr There is a fungus that eats CDs I believe something similar can happen to the coating on lenses I have asked about re-coating and they (the optician) said it can't be done.. well they would say that wouldn't they ? so it would be interesting to know for sure.
November 9, 200916 yr Best place is Phyathai hospital in Sriracha. Excellent opthamologist, and they will order your glasses. Exam very reasonable. Barry
November 9, 200916 yr I strongly recommend Pattaya Optical on Central Road about 200 meters north of 2nd Road.
November 9, 200916 yr Be careful with high-index lenses. The prescription may be off by a quarter diopter from the lenses they used to test your eyes with (since those are plain). I had this happen to me and for the longest time couldn't figure out why my new lenses gave me slightly blurred vision. That was the reason... Edited November 9, 200916 yr by ballzafire

November 10, 200916 yr I strongly recommend Pattaya Optical on Central Road about 200 meters north of 2nd Road. I have heard that too but transport is a problem for some of us. Loads of Baht Buses run up Central Road JT, or are you referring to the problems you encounter when using them?
