Vga Output On Notebook To Component Input On Tv

I have recently moved and the only TV I have has AV inputs/outputs and a component input. It does not have any S video or VGA ports.

The component input works fine with one of my DVD players, but I have a very distorted picture (with horizontal lines) with my second, cheaper, but newer DVD player. This may or may not be relevant.

Previously I was able to connect my laptop display to a more modern TV using the VGA input on the TV and selecting the "PC" source on the TV.

As this TV only has component input, I bought a cable with VGA out and component "in" and connected it. I get the same distorted picture with horizontal lines as I get with my 2nd DVD player.

I have been Googling this problem but cannot find any solutions that work. I have changed the screen resolution on the notebook, but it makes no difference.

My understanding is that there are two types of component input on TV's, which may explain why one of my DVD player works and the other doesn't.

I also understand that VGA carries an analog signal and the 'component' is a digital signal. Therefor I may need some kind of VGA converter.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this, and do I need a converter, and are they available here?

Or should I just give up and buy a new TV?

Thanks :)

Is you're computer from the US by any chance? If so it may be putting out a NTSC signal and the TV may only accept PAL. I may be totally wrong but something to check.

Hi,

You can certainly buy a range of adaptors for this kind of thing and I have seen quite a good selection at Apple shops. I can't remember if they have VGA to component but it is worth a try.

Even the cheapest models of TV now come with RGB/VGA inputs and you can get a very decent LCD TV for less than 10,000 B these days, so definitely worth considering anyway.

VProblem solved. Found a neat little converter in Tuk Com. Has VGA in to VGA/AV/S.Video out.

1,200 Baht including multiple connection cables. The cables alone would cost twice that in the west.

I hooked up to the AV input on my TV and quality is fine.
