Police raid on Pantip pirates

BANGKOK: -- In a raid aimed at verifying the effectiveness of district police activities, Registration Division police yesterday seized over 10,000 pornographic items and pirated software at Pantip Plaza and arrested four people for allegedly possessing the products with intent to sell.

Registration Division deputy commander Colonel Wisut Wanitbut led police on the raid of shops at the Phetburi Road shopping mall.

Akapan Bunsup, 19, Nattapol Chanthongdet, 21, Suradet Longwaree, 28, Pinij Chitsuramontri, 24, were arrested for possessing pornographic movies, as well as pirated movies and software.

Some 10,000 items were seized. Under a March 29 order, senior police will be punished if more than 5,000 items of pornography and pirated software are seized in a raid within their district.

...as opposed to the other 364 days out of the year where such trade goes on as usual at Panthip and any number of other places throughout the kingdom? :o

Yes agreed, but there has been a reduction in the number of people involved in selling them imo as they find it much more trouble than in years gone by. Arrest, fine, sell, arrest fine , sell etc.

Many of the 'shops' that come on the market in such malls these days appear to be cd sellers looking to cash out

I wonder what the punishment will be for the senior police.?

Perhaps no invite to the film show.. :o

Only four people were stupid enough to get caught.

From the vendours I deal with normally they know ahead of time when the raids will occur. I have a feeling the 4 that were nicked didnt pay their tea dosh!! :o

It could be that the vendors were invited to put forward a couple scapegoats, who would of course be paid well for the inconvenience of being arrested.

That's the impression I've always had of these dog-and-pony shows: make a couple of token arrests, nice photo-op for the press, looks like the cops are doing something about the problem, business as usual tomorrow.

Well, for real or a show, I've heard vendors have been hiking up prices, blaming the increase in raids.. higher operating costs, you know... :o

yes, you're almost right, but.... yesterday was "surprise" action as my friend - legit pc dealer - told me. somehow nodody did whistle before, so it was successful big raid. but today everything was back in biz, as I saw in Pantip - adult movies, pirated soft and so on.

However smart vendours keep their product elsewhere - normally pick what you want. Mobile goes into action and items are delivered. :o

I got to know one of the guys pretty well,as I only used his stall for games. He told me B50,000 a month was what they paid for a small stall in a good location to the police,he had several, not seen him recently when I been up in bangkok.

its in terminal decline anyway , the DVDs and CDs are many times corrupted or scratched, dont work . and the guys hassling people to buy are a nuisance so buyers avoid them and the areas they hangout.

the software hustlers will kill it off eventually.

Prob purchased about 50 or so dvd(s) nonporn. 4/5 bad out of the entire lot.. most of them seem to be rips from studio preview copies.

When the software companies adjust their ridiculous prices, then, maybe....

Gee I guess the police have done all they can do to curb terrorism and bomb blasts. What a relief, they have this all under control, and now they can spend their time going around and busting porno shops.

The Cockatoos must have been asleep :o

What's the score up at Fortune, still 150b for software?

what about Silom Rd/Patpong? are the MIB afraid to do same-same successfull raid in those areas simply due to the fact that there might be too many tourist watching the action?

...and I'm sure the timing has nothing to do with the presence of the US FTA negotiating team in town at the moment.

It's such a more pleasant place to shop than Panthip. Better parking, better public transportation, not as crowded, no sleazy touts.
