The Big Question

Featured Replies

Hello to all. And a special hello to the Moderators and Editors of our Forum.

Russian man arrested for fraud...

Tunisian man arrested for rape...

Bahrain man arrested for murder...

Turkish man arrested for drugs smuggling...

Burmese man arrested for starting a fire...

Swiss man arrested for being drunk and disorderly...

German man is arrested for visa violation...

Thai man is searched for by police for...

English man has robbed the bank in...

Etc...

These are not real information posts, but only examples of what we see here every day.

Are you getting the message? Please stop referring to nationality, unless it is essential.

For example:

A British national of Greek extraction knocked up a Thai girl of Chinese ethnicity.

Parents decided to marry. What nationality and religion should the child be?

I mean no offence to ANY nationality or religion... But I feel some posts do. :)

If it was reported,

A foreigner was caught robbing a bank, guess what the first question would be ?

Yep, you're right.

" What country does he come from " ?

I disagree. Spent most of my life fighting the 'farang' generalisation and pigeon-holing and here you go wanting to step back in time again.

Don't do it man, we have come so far, the battle is almost won. Don't give up! :)

Putting aside the potential for humour (e.g. an englishman gets his wallet stolen by a kathoey or a German impales his buttocks on a fence post, etc.), the inclusion of nationalities in the reports can be very helpful. For example, if you were Swedish , what would you rather read?

1. A person riding a motorcycle fell off and is now in Patong General Hospital.

2. A young woman riding a motorcycle fell off and is now in Patong General Hospital. The identification she was carrying identifies her as Uma Bergkvist, age 19 and it is believed that she was a tourist. Authorities have contacted the Swedish embassy.

You can bet that if some of the local Swedes saw the more detailed description in 2, someone would be over at the hospital to check on the kid or on the phone to the Swedish consul/embassy to see if he or she could help.

Now if, the description was

3. A young Swedish woman from Kamala riding a motorcycle fell off her Honda Wave and was fatally injured when run over by a vehicle. Her identity is being witheld while the next of kin is advised.

If you know a Swedish lady in Kamala that has a Honda Wave, you'd want to know, so that you could react accordingly.

People do want to know such things and it's not always motivated by racial reasons.

Doesn't only happen here in Thailand. Read any news report anywhere in the world, and unless the name is suppressed (for whatever reason) the media will report as much about the individual as possible. It's called News, and it's what people want to know!

The OP is taking things well out of proportion here.

Silly Thread.

According to my Thai Neighbours, I come from Farangland, speak Farang, read and write Farang and my ancestors probably evolved from the planet Mercury.

Nice that at least somebody here recognises my nationality.

By the way, cannot directly reply to any OPs posts, the reply buttons have disappeared.

...and my ancestors probably evolved from the planet Mercury.

Well, better than if they thought you were from Uranus. :)

Sorry, but I haven't been totally childish in a long time. Just couldn't help it.

for me it is interesting if an Austrian rob a bank or if it was any other farang.

you can't censor out informations just because they are not politically correct.

Three guesses who I nominate as the next poster for news clipping, the second two guesses don't count.

Can I laugh :) and guess at the same time?

What is "The Big Question?"

What is wrong with reporting accurate information including the nationality of the person in the report?

What is "The Big Question?"

What happened to the Australian criminal?

What is "The Big Question?"

Please, don`t be silly.

Everyone knows there are no Australian criminals.
