Hard Drive Making Strange Noises

Featured Replies

I have a 1.5 tb harddrive placed in a media player and bought both in June this year.

Last couple of nights when I turn media player on I hear some strange noises coming from media player. Noise does not happen all the time so when I hear noise I turn player off and then turn on again after a few minutes. Sometimes noise happens again and at other times does not occur.

Can anyone please give me an idea of what is going on? I do not have the expertise to diagnose the problem and really do not want to take harddrive to shop as it has some sensitive data on it. I am assuming harddrive is giving me a warning that it is about to die but would like some expert advice if possible please.

I do have the majority of data backed up on another harddrive but not all.

What brand?

"I have a 1.5 tb harddrive placed in a media player" - what does that mean ?

Help us to help you - is it an internal or external drive ?

Perhaps you have other websites with sound playing through Media Player, hence the 'noise'.

Is your 1.5 TB disk for purely music and video ? Do you have any cr@p like ACDSee loaded on your PC ?

Whatever - we can get it under control.

Sata hard drive which is placed inside media player but can be removed if necessary. I have videos, music and photos stored on hard drive. Hard drive was bought at Tukcom Pattaya.

I do not have media player connected to pc only the television.

Wherever the noise comes from. A HD can die every moment. So it is always good to have a backup disk. Everything else is gambling. When the data are gone it is too late to think about this.

Does the Media Player have a cooling fan installed? Could just be this making noise.

I have a playtime with a cooling fan. Makes noise if the unit in Hoizontal but not if its vertical.

What brand is the HardDisc?

I susspect it is the player thats the problem.
