TOT high speed internet, 590 thb for 3 mega, somebody has it ? Promotion available nationwide, but why a phone line is not needed at Pattaya?

Hi,

Do you know if this promotion for Tot internet 3mb ends at the end of the month (november) ?

http://tothispeed.tot.co.th/

Can you explain why Tot says that you don't need a phone line to apply for this high speed internet in Pattaya ? Is is cable internet ?

Thanks.

^ But when you call to report a problem they ask you for your 'phone number so they can check your account?

From what I remember this price (590 Baht) was previously for 2mb service. Will those already subscribed at 590 for 2mb be automatically upgraded to a 3mb service or do you have to re-apply?

It's phone line, don't know about not needing a number. I got new install with number (five months waiting). I have had the Goldcyber version for about six months now, rarely exceed 1Mb/s, often drops to 200 kb/s in the afternoon. Sometimes service disappears completely and has been down for 1-3 days at a time. TTT is much the same. Good luck.

TOT is for people like me - when there's nothing else available. By and large, it sucks. If you are in Pattaya, go with True or TT&T / 3BB (same thing?)....

My TOT 3Mbit has been pretty good up until 2 days ago, now it cuts out regularly which is very annoying. The problem with TOT is then that these things never get fixed, or if they get fixed, it's accidental - not because you called and reported a problem.

And yeah - they run a copper wire to your house, and you get a phone number assigned, which is then your contract number. You don't have to install or pay for an actual physical phone.

I stick with the Old Solomon edge and put up with the eternity it takes at times. But it works albeit very slowly.

As for the varities mentioned here, they all seem to disappoint. It's a thrid world country reluctant or incapable or investing in a technology that wroks. When they are banning so many internet out of fear, loathing and ignornce you can understand why they don't want to speed things up.

Also, the low levels of education or lack of amongst politicians means they are incapable of grasping the argument or placing Thailand on an international footing. The last thing they want is an educated populace, just like this very Thaivisa set up doesn't want anything other than ingratiating comments about how wonderful it all is. It simply isn't but you're not to be critical, even objectively critical.

That is partly explained by the lack of insight by those with the correcting pen.

Red line that lot. Don't worry, I'll get my coat.

Ive had CAT for more than 12 months and it has been very very reliable, i now also have True, it too has been very reliable, download speeds have been a bit sketchy but reliable none the less.

Do you have CAT hinet "premium" starting at 1890 baht for 2Mbit, or "consumer" (1090 Baht for 4Mbit)?

I have the latter in my office and was a bit disappointed with it. It's very slow for web surfing, nowhere near 4Mbit. It has 4Mbit to BKK meaning the line is that fast, it's just that the contention ratio is so high that you end up sharing with everyone. That Bittorrent runs at full speed is nice on occasion but must contribute to the problem.

Going to try out premium now - I want to make it more usable for my day to day work activities. Single downloads, websurfing, ftp to our internal servers, skype, all stuff that is currently very slow on my CAT. Slower than my TOT 3Mbit line.

As for reliability, I can't remember any outages from CAT, so yes that beats TOT.

BTW it's easy to get a good internet line in Thailand, but you have to be in a major metropolitan area, and you have to pay for it. Pay BHT 6000+ and you should get very good service. It's just a question of money + the consumer grade lines are slow.

Anyone still paying 590Baht for a 2Meg connections should go down to TOT

You can either upgrade to 3Meg or reduce the charge to 490Baht per month and stay at 2meg.

But you have to agree to a 12 month contract. You must pay for 12 months even if you cancel.

You are not quite right in what you say. As for the "moderators" I will mention that later in this post. I have been using true hi speed(oxymoron I know) here just outside Bangkok and have had only minor problems(lived here about 9 years now). Speed anything from 1 mbs to 5 mbs d-load and local about 2 to 3mbs. International never gets over 512kbs upload, but I have had 1.2mbs d-load - sure, when kids out of school, they all go online gaming, so speed drops to around 200-350 kbs d-load and 150 to 300kbs upload - as to unfavorable comments being allowed on Thaivisa, you are wrong. About the only thing you can not criticize is the Royal family and that is as it should be, apart from the FACT that the royal family here do so much for the people and country (unlike in the west), it is part of Thai culture to respect the Royals no matter what and this is T/L - take it or leave. As to banning internet sites, one of the biggest probs we have here on the net is teenage porn and criticism of the Royal family. Often this occurs on a decent site, but the site gets hijacked by these kids(and others) to solicit customers. By kids I mean both sexes, aged from 13 to 16, which under Thai law is illegal and I personally agree with it. I agree it is a pity that otherwise good sites get closed down, but what can you expect the authorities to do? Thaivisa in my own experience is very tolerant of critical posts(check out some of mine!) and you must remember that this website is clicked on all over the world, so the "Mods" have to maintain some sort of balance of standards and I wouldn't want their job at all, or they will loser readers and the site will get a bad rep. You call this a 3rd world country and I guess that is a fair comment, but T/L is I think number 5 on the list of world exporters. If it is 3rd world at the moment, it's catching up fast. The Government seem to be catching an awful lot of corruption cases - including the once "untouchables" very high up, so hopefully there is a change for the better in the wind. You can not expect that to happen over night, but it is happening( I speak fluent Thai and see the news every night) and a lot of the cases that are shown, are not in the English rags(who wants to air their dirty laundry to the tourists) so if you want to make an informed, educated post, my advice is to learn to speak Thai so that not only will you better understand their culture( a major reason us expats come out here), but you will be better informed on what is really going on.

The reality is those high speeds quoted are ONLY for websites IN Thailand! When calling ToT to tell them my service is down again they always ask 'What about websites in Thailand' so I always ask them 'Why would I care about those?'. So much for being an internet hub.

My internet was down all yesterday evening, so I'm even more cranky than usual.

Same with me. I have to do all my downloads before 9 AM otherwise it takes forever to watch a youtube. I like to liste to internet radios in the afternoon. Many times it's endless buffering. I've complained but it's the LOS! And my area (Pattaya 3 rd) is not eligible for a speed upgrade!

TOT is a complete joke...

I have 1mbit or at least pay for it... never get speeds up to that, not even close

if you go to a website outside of thailand, its better to have a 56k dialup modem

extreme slow, specially even slower after 4 pm when kiddies come home and start using

not usable for anything after 7-8 pm

school hollidays = same situation as everyday 7-8 pm = super slow

sometimes my modem takes 30-100 tries to get synchronised... at 1 mbit

so i think i will not upgrade as it will / is even harder to try to get synchronised (that is before an internet connection can be tried to make)

do you check your ip adres also ?

normally TOT is 125. range

sometimes i suddenly find meself in the 113. or 118. range = TOT is checking every move you do, i suppose

my 2 satang

why i have TOT ? well... no True available and i was quite happy in my previous home

I've got a new 2Mbyte (Bt490/mth) TOT connection in Jomtien Beach and find the service from TOT to be fine. I regularly ping the Thai server and it returns 1.73 - 1.78 Mbps and my cable runs 350 meters to the pillar box. Considerably slower for servers outside of Thailand BUT TOT do tell you, at least the Pattaya office does, that the speed is for Thailand servers. For $14 a month what do you expect? Seems to be a lot of whingers on here wanting high speed internet but prepared to pay peanuts for the privilege.

The service was down this morning and I reported it to 1100 at 7.45am. The call centre operator spoke perfect English, took my telephone number to call back on and within 30 minutes had a call back from the service centre from a technician who spoke almost no English but that's not the point. He managed to explain there was a network fault and they were working on it. The system was back up three hours later.

For everyone who's gonna jump on and say this isn't typical read my lips: I DONT CARE. Take a breath and look out the window at where you are. Don't like the internet in Thailand? Move back home and see what you get for $14 a month. As Thailand builds more capacity the speeds will increase and the prices will come down as they have in the last two years.

So for the sake of the Op. I don't know when the promotion runs out but you can sign up for the 2Mbyte plan and upgrade to a faster speed if you need (and the line will support it) without a penalty. If you sign up for a higher speed and then downgrade there is a penalty of Bt1,000 per time that you change. If you cancel within the 12 month period you need to pay the full installation price, not the promotion price.

Same story my end. In addition when the service breaks down they can take days to send an engineer out.

I've gone from 1MB/256k to 3MB/512k with TOT over 2.5 years without any increase in payment, though I did have to sign a new contract when I changed to 2MB/512k, which was a two year buy in. The last upgrade to 3MB was free and with no extension. I just had to ask for it.

I have no problems with the service. There are times when it is slow, and mid-morning seems to have been a bit of a dog in the last week or so, but afternoon, and night time it's fine. I get 340kb/sec from Thai sites (I use Thai mirrors for a lot of open source downloads), but it ranges all the way down to 'very low' for overseas sites. Somehow, I have managed to download a 9MB in about 15 seconds from an overseas server, which doesn't seem possible.

I live close to a dSLAM, in a small South Thai town, and probably have zero contention. YMMV.

Hm, back when I started my contract I was told that the phone service is mandatory. I get charged 100 THB extra each month though I don't even have an actual phone installed.

I am living in a different province though.

Does anybody know more?

I have been using TOT Goldcyber for 3,5 years now (switched to TOT platiniumcyber 6 months ago and needed change contract for lower price) and its been great at some time and also been terrible for months on end. Most of the time it has not been the ADSL service that gave me trouble but the useless TOT DNS servers.

Sinds then I have changed my ADSL modem so I could set the DNS servers I want to use from the totaly useless TOT to OpenDNS servers. Sinds then I had no more issues with my internet connection.

I have been using TOTs Goldcyber for a year (2Mb) and it is working great. Usually have 1,7 Mb speed on Thai sites and 1.2-1.4 to other countries. These are normal figures all over the world on a 2Mb contract. So, it works great, can even run streaming video from swedish sites. I am in Bang Saray south of Pattaya.

As indicated by BrianInBangkok above, many Internet problems are caused by slow or overloaded Domain Name Servers here in Thailand. Switching to OpenDNS, or Google's new DNS, or DNS Advantage (which has a DNS in Hong Kong) vastly improves connections. It certainly cleared up my problems.

For DNS Advantage, set your DNS (in the TCP/IP properties) to

primary 156.154.70.1

secondary 156.154.71.1

I had a look at my hard disk and checked my "first home" invoices (second home has TOT)

32 euro/month or 1600 baht for a 15Mb connection (can't check speedtest for first home from second home though). Compare that to TOT's offer for 12Mb at 1500 baht and tell me who's cheaper and deliver better quality? Still Guessing? :)

Oh, I have TOT 3Mb and speedtest to Frankfurt, Germany shows 2.34Mb/s.

Really wondering what that would show for TOT 12Mb/s

From what I remember this price (590 Baht) was previously for 2mb service. Will those already subscribed at 590 for 2mb be automatically upgraded to a 3mb service or do you have to re-apply?

Well considering my position I was still on the 1 MB service. I had to ask them to upgrade me even though I was paying 590Bt
