Adding Our Guest House To Gps

Featured Replies

We were told recently that our Guest House is not listed on GPS, so our customers could not find us! GPS is very new to us and to be honest we do not know a lot about it (been here to long). :D

Can somebody advise us on how to get our Guest House listed on this system please? :)

The most convenient method is to find out your premise's GPS coordinates and provide the info to your guests much like telling them your address. If you don't have a GPS device to identify the coordinates, you can also look up the coordinates via Wikimapia, Googlemap, etc. A nearby well-known landmark can be a good spot to browse for your location.

You can also add it to "Google Earth" along with pictures and details if you wish. All for free.

You have already received the two best answers. A friend with a GPS can give you your exact coordinates. There are many different address coordinate formats so I suggest using the easiest one and that is the all decimal format. It will look like this;

N13.75392 E100.51535

All businesses should have their coordinates on their business cards and advertisements.

Lets hope the gps satellites don't fall out of the sky or the Americans shut them down! Otherwise we will all be stuffed, becoming so reliant on them!

I understand the OP’s question a bit differently. The maps you buy for your GPS navigation devices – ESRI, Rottweiler, Garmin, or whatever these maps are called – come with some points of interest (POI), including hotels, already listed on the maps. The OP owns a guest house which is not yet on these maps. What does he have to do to get it on the next update of the maps? Getting the GPS coordinates for his place is one thing, but how does he get his place listed as a POI on the maps that are commercially available?

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

A friend of mine has a small shop way out in the boonies. A guy stopped by and asked him is he would like to be included on the ESRI GPS map. Other than the yearly map updating tours, I have no idea how a person would contact them.

I would imagine sending ESRI your contact info, address and precise GPS co-ords would be a good start.

Hi Martin.

Have you been able to find your GH on Google Earth or Google maps?

Let me know if you have, I may be able to help you.

Gary is correct about the format... :)

I found the station at BSYai, but that's all, it's the only landmark I recall.

There are many different GPS maps around. You will have to supply your coordinates to each of the publishers. If you email me I will include your GH in the next version of the Wanderlust map (smellybiker.com).

You can add your GH yourself to the OSMap on OSM.org. It will be in the Garmin map set on http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php about a week later. Can't get any faster than that.

Cheers,

Peter.
