Connection Speeds

Featured Replies

I am happy with my connection speeds: 52 and 50.6 and yesterday 48, but I notice sometimes there are days when everything is slow then other days when everything is quick. What is the reason for this?

Also the bbc homepage loads up really quickly yet the hotmail homepage is so slow. Why is hotmail so slow? I would have thought microsoft would have been fast in order to show off their expertise.

If/when I subscribe to broadband with 256 do they have slow days? and is it actually 'safe' to be online all the time?

W.S.

Don't confuse connection speeds with actual download speeds. I am connected at 2.5 mbs, but my actual speed is between 100-1700 kbs. This also is true for dial up.

Why are some sites faster than others .... well may depend on the hops between the server and yourself and the ping times of each of these hops.

Yes, also ADSL has fast days and slow days. Here also different factors like number of people online and connectivity with the 'outside' world.

BTW 256 kbs is of course faster than dial up, but not really much. Go for a higher package like 1024kbs or higher.

WS - It is difficult (if not impossible) to determine your actual connection/upload/download speeds as they will vary from second to second due to hundreds of factors inherant in the system.

There are literally dozens of "speed test" links from which to run speed checks. The following will give you a rough reading of your particular setup:

McAfee Speedometer

SmartTest Download Test

SmartTest Upload Test

Another very small utility (42kb) you can download and run from your position:

SpeedTest

cheers :o

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

It's one of those days like Songkran that True shines .... :o

Ha! Beat you, but I had to retake the test about 5 times! The test was run with the 2992 KB file at http://www.testmy.net/. Oh, how I wish every day were Songkran.

http://www.numion.com/ tests your actual browsing speed instead of your download speed. It does that by accessing various web sites around the world while calculating the speed. And it keeps a history of your last 30 or so tests for comparison.

Worth a look see.

Melus ...... :o

But it took me only one time ...... :D

Are you on the home or business package ....?

BTW Today's results are less rosy:

Connection is:: 660 Kbps about 0.7 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

Download Speed is:: 81 kB/s

Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

Test Time:: Fri Apr 15 14:27:23 UTC+0700 2005

Comments for dial-up appreciated.

By the way does turning off the Windows XP firewall improve speed?

Wilson Steer.

Did anyone check their Upload speeds?

(You might want to have some smelling salts handy. :D:D:o )

Not noticeably at first, however after you've been bombarded with hundreds of viri and spyware..........things will definately slow down. :D

cheers :D

Sniffdog,

The high speed multi Mbps packages are fine if you are in Bkk! Out in the provinces these would cost you an arm and a leg :o

I am on a 256/128 package from Ji-net and I can assure you it was a very decent and worthwile improvement.

It just puts the oomph back into surfing, not only because of speed, but also in reduced ping times.

I can download roughly 6 times faster, and combined with the higher reliability I can start a download before I go to sleep and have around 800Mb down when I wake up...

Nobody in their right mind even wants to do a 300Mb download on a modem :D

So yes, in Bkk go for the fastest you can get. If you're in the provinces, the 256/128 or 512/256 packages are definately worth the upgrade :D

I have no clue where you talk about, Monty.

ADSL goes for 500 baht for 256kbs, while 1024kbs goes for 1,000 per month in Pattaya (where WilsonSteer comes from).

ADSL rates

Not quite sure if you have to add CasualADSL to the carrier rates ... but anyway not more than 2,000/m for 1024.

BTW I do 800 mb in 44 minutes ..... Barely enough time to have a shower .... :o
