Another McDonalds is going up in front of the Imm Hotel at Thapae Gate.

There has been a lot of hype about their new gourmet coffees that some people say are better than Starbucks,which sell for a more reasonable price. Have any of you coffee fanatics tried it yet? Is their coffee really that good?

Coffee aside, you have to ask yourself why McDonald's and their like are allowed to operate so close to at the border of the Old Town, sad really.

"Allowed" to operate? Should that area be reserved for the British pubs, Starbucks and Go Go Bars that are all there now? :)

Of course not, but how's about something in keeping with the spirit of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand and it's associated heritage, unless of course the good wardens of CM are happy to allow that type of encroachment on their history and to promote poor quality and unhealthy food. And on a similar point, how's about we have more Thai book shops in that area and fewer Western stores. :D

i suppose if we want to improve on the aesthetics of the area, then we should ban the

hordes of fat, old caucasian men --- particularly the ones wearing loud hawaiian shirts,

bermuda shorts, sandals and black socks.

There was a whole brand new shopping center in the same location devoted to selling traditional Thai products - no one was interested. The place was empty from day one and eventually was sold and turned into the Imm Hotel.

The rents are high near Thapae Gate and selling stuff that absolutely no one wants does not pay the bills.

Look, UG says he's not leaving so there's little that can be done, OK!

But slightly more seriously, it's really not so much about aesthetics as it is about context and education - McDonald's doesn't fit in an area such as Thapae Gate and the local population doesn't need their help in how to eat good food.

I appreciate UG that it will be better for your business but in the cold light of day, even you must admit, that it's not a positive step forward for Chiang Mai's old town to have more local people eating McDonald's, no?

For a second I thought you were referring to me :) , but my socks are white, phew... :D

You seem to be ignoring all of the stores and shops that have nothing to do with Thai tradition that are there already.

There is a pizza joint, bangers and mash, beer bars, a Coyote Bar and and a Go Go Bar only steps away. McDonalds should fit in pretty well. :)

I don't think it will affect my business one way or another and Thai people eat plenty of sugar laden, fat foods already - ever heard of Pad Thai? – so, an occasional burger won't make much difference one way or another.

Allowed to operate anywhere really, not just cultural type places.

They are responsible for so much damage to our planet, not to mention the total cruelty visited upon the cows that become those hamburgers. And massive hamburger consumption greatly contributes to third world hunger, and gigantic profits to a tiny elite.

Mcdonalds reflect a system of greed and plundering, while simultaneously causing any number of health problems to those who eat their produce long enough.

To have them anywhere in public places should be a crime. If they really must be in existence, keep them out of sight. Ugly ugly.

The existence of past mistakes hardly confers a right to make new ones! Sad that the city brethren care so little about the health of residents.

Pad thai causes very little or no harm to the planet's resources, and does not depend on the cruel and totally inhumane rearing practices of other animals to feed a small percentage of people on this planet to line the pockets of a tiny band of elites, both of whom directly contribute to one billion hungry people.

If people wish to damage their long-term health, knowingly or unknowingly (and the latter is sadly the case all too often), then that is one thing, but in doing so they are contributing to massive land-clearing and tree destruction that does more damage to our planet than any smoker, dope-user, or heroin user could begin to do.

Maybe human beings should stop settling our differences by killing each other instead of blaming all of our problems on McDonalds. :)

Not all problems, but many. Human beings eating billions of hamburgers each year are contributing to the unspeakable cruelty that is the cow's the 'life'. The lives these cows live, the 'food' they're fed, the deaths they have to endure, are truly awful and reflect on man, the species, in the most deplorable manner.

So not only do humans kill billions of cows to create these hamburgers, they directly contribute to unnecessary hunger for one sixth of the world's human population who can't eat the food grown in their countries because it's exported to the US to make those billions of hamburgers.

Hamburgers kill big time. And those who eat them for years eventually find out what chronic diseases mean. There is just far too little mainstream information out there informing people of just what goes on to get them their hamburger, and then what will happen to their own health down the line.

The system of profit has not an iota of empathy in it. It is rapacious, and devours everything in its way, killing humans, cows, and our planet in equal measure.

If you folks are calling on condeming the world wide meat industry and demanding that everyone on the planet become Vegans, you might have a point, but putting all the blame on McDonalds is just plain silly.

Why don't you just tell everyone that they are not allowed to eat meat anymore? That is where your rheteric leads. :)

rampant capitalism is slowly devouring thailand and other non-first world countries. The system is omnipresent, and at this juncture in time, unstoppable. Everything, and everyone, must be turned into a statistic that supports the lust for profit by big business, and those greedy selfish amoral folk who run it all.

Pepsi, coke, fanta, pizza, burgers, ice-creams, processed snacks, and all those other western foods that have so misshapen their own people are now in thailand and other countries big time. It's good news for big business however, not only do they sell more of this crap, they get even more business from the pills and procedures from the increased customer base in hospitals and pharmacies. A human tragedy of epic proportions that shows no immediate signs of being reversed. Terrible!

I'm not putting all the blame on this company, but they, and other burger purveyors, do warrant a lot of it. And i'm not talking about all meat, just the meat that comes from cows. Feeding cows compared to feeding chickens and pigs reduces billions more acres of our planets resources to waste than other animals. Cows are bigger and need tonnes more food and water to feed them before they become hamburgers.

It's not really rhetoric, it's factual reality that most don't know about, and others refuse to recognise.

Talking about the meat industry world-wide would indeed be a worthwhile thread, but this one's about those red and yellow people that symbolise an anti-human and anti-life system of profit and plunder.

A touch emotional but broadly correct, despite UG's attempt at diversion tactics.

Pad Thai with meat does and most Thai people like meat. Are you Food Fascists going to forbid them from eating meat after you close down all the McDonalds and Western restaurants? :)

COW.GIFCOWS' MILK - - A TOXIC DRINK ?

(1995)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In a word - YES ! It is !

Cow milk today is such a chemical, toxic concoction, that it is killing the baby

calves that nurse from their mothers ! Plus it is shortening the lives of the cows themselves ! But that's a secret - YOU are not suppose to know about that ! Why ? Because government makes big bucks on all the harmful things we have today, including the dairy industry ! How ? First of all, cows' milk is loaded

with more than 144 chemicals that are pumped into the cow; antibiotics,

growth hormones, drugs, pesticides of all kinds, and fattening chemicals to

fatten up the beef cows. Yes - YOU are ingesting all those chemicals too, if you drink the milk or eat the meat; and these poisons stay in your cells and tissues forever !

Lots more about this subject at... http://home1.gte.net/carriet/CowsMilk.htm

After you get rid of McDonald's, meat and capitalism, milk should probably be next on the list.
