Rimmer
Pattaya, December 9 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : Over the past few years a number of bars employing Eastern European dancers have appeared, mostly on Walking Street, and they have been operating in apparent contravention of Thailand’s Labor Laws. In the early hours of Wednesday Morning, Police Lieutenant Colonel Rangsalit, from the Chonburi Provincial Police Special Investigations Unit led a team of officers on a raid of the B52 Nightclub located within Soho Square at the southern end of Walking Street. Inside the club a total of 11 Eastern European Women were detained and appeared to be working as hostesses and dancers. They were challenged to produce passports and work permits and were unable to do so. All the women were taken to Pattaya Police Station along with the Thai manager of the venue who will be charged with illegally employing foreigners. The women appeared relaxed as their paperwork was being processed at the station. If found guilty of working without a valid work permit, they could face deportation. http://www.pattayaone.net [newsfooter][/newsfooter] 9 12 2009

sharecropper
So that's Pattaya police, Banglamung police and Chonburi police that need greasing, as well as city/municipal flunkies at each level, no doubt. Eventually there will be no profit in bars and no fatted calves left, and then what will they all do for tea money. Policing in Thailand needs restructuring and professionalising, urgently, from top to bottom, and certainly in Pattaya. And no, I don't believe this was a raid motivated by a desire to see work permit laws properly enforced.
shotover
Any idea if the owner of this B52 is foreign, or Thai?
TheWalkingMan
I was surprised that this place re-opened. The little area has become something of a dead zone with places opening and closing with extreme regularity. Reminds me of the Avenue Shopping Mall. aussiechick
You're right - the only place that seems to be doing any business is Utopia and that is probably because of the band more than anything else!!
TheWalkingMan
You're right - the only place that seems to be doing any business is Utopia and that is probably because of the band more than anything else!! Utopia lucks out because it is on the corner and people are familiar with the band or at least with the guitar player. But if they were a little further back, they would be having problems.
