April 21, 200521 yr Sometimes in chat rooms, I see the word Paew แป่ว. I think it's some sort of exclamation (and not an alternative spelling of PLAO ปล่าว). Anyone know any more on this word? Thanks in advance for any advice/help.
April 21, 200521 yr Curious. I knew a lady with a name like (คุณ)หญิงแป่ว. I originally misheard her name as 'Belle', but it turned out it meant 'flat', and was given to her as she had a flat face as a baby. Confusingly, I can't find anything like this word in the dictionary, so I'm beginning to wonder if I've misremembered. I was sure I had seen the word in my pocket dictionary, but that's disappeared. April 22, 200521 yr แป่ว is kind of slang word. The origin is from แป้ว which means deflated, flat(balloon). แป่ว means to be disappointed, to be frustrated , to lose face, to be broken face. For example; A: You look smart. (คุณดูหล่อจัง) B: Thank you. (smile with proudness)(ขอบคุณครับ) A: But...you look a lit bit old. (แต่คุณดูแก่ไปหน่อยนะ) B: แป่ว !! (your feeling right now, like a ballon was punctured) Or, A: Wow! Do you want to be my girl friend? B: Sorry, I'm married. A: แป่ว !! There are many situations to use this word but all are base on the meaning I mentioned.
April 22, 200521 yr Author Many thanks Yoot for that clear explanation, and the examples. Dictionaries don't tend to have slang words like that, but they're often useful words to know.
April 22, 200521 yr Author Thanks for your reply Richard. Now that you mention it, I also seem to remember that PAEW can be a name too (although different tone maybe).
