International lab shows no residues in Thai white prawns

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's assertions that the nation's white prawns are free from toxic residues have been vindicated by a US-based laboratory which failed to find traces of cholramfinicol during recent tests.

Mr. Sitdhi Boonyaratpalin, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, said that the results of the tests conducted by Starsuburger and Siegel Inc. on 28 February represented an important step in the export of Thai prawns, as it would boost the confidence of importing nations.

The alleged presence of toxic residue in Thai agricultural products, including prawns, has often been cited by importing nations as a barrier to trade.

gee, I wonder why countries would object to the presence of Chloramphenicol (Thai News Agency should hire me to edit their releases)...

afterall Choloramphenicol is just one of the most powerful anti-biotics available with a plethora of side-effects (including potentially fatal leukoplakia). It's used as a last ditch anti-biotic to fight major infections such as typhoid. It's misuse in addition to compounding the anti-biotic resistant bacteria problem can kill if misused.

Also, TNA saying it was "alledged" presence, is a lie. This anti-biotic and many other foreign substances have been detected and confirmed in Thai exported food products. That is why they are frequently banned.
