just need to know what time the border closes in Nongkhai . My flight gets in at 5pm in Udon. Would like to cross that day.

It'll take you 45 minutes from Udon Thani to the Friendship Bridge if you hop in a 200 baht limousine. You'll be there around 6pm. You'll be paying $1 extra for your Laos VOA.

10PM is my understanding too, so arriving at Friendship Bridge around 6PM (alllowing for transport time from Udon) should leave you plenty of time.
