Oven Recommendations

Featured Replies

I had hoped to move into a townhome by now, but as it looks like I will be in my condo for awhile, and as I really need to be able to cook more of my dishes, I need to buy an oven.

I bought a House Worth portable oven some time ago, but to be blunt, it is a piece of garbage.  It can't even broil adequately.

So my question is twofold:

1. What is the best countertop oven available, and where?  I checked HomePro and Powerbuy in Pin Klao, but neither had anything which looked good.  Only one, a Delhongi, looked even like a possibility.  So where in Bangkok do they have a line of quality countertop models?

2.  Is there any reason I can't buy a regular oven and just put in on the counter, on a kitchen stand, or on the washing machine?  While much larger than a portable, at least they are a real oven.  I saw a few at HomePro which should fit the bill as far as cooking.

As I am in a condo, I have to use electric vice gas, and if I get a real oven, I could use it when I finally do move and have to redo whatever existing kitchen is there.

You might check Verasu, on Wireless Road.

Verasu

We use Gaggenau at home.

And it's combination electricity and gas

Bon appetit...

Thanks Curt1951.

And lazygourmet, is that a built in model you use?  I will be selling this condo later, and I don't want to do major re-modeling with the existing counters.

No, it's not.

I am not at home until first week of January, but when back I will send you the exact references about this model.

Went to Verasu.  Interesting place, but their free-standing oven choices were limited.

Went later to HomeWorks.  I am now considering getting a regular oven, then building a stand so I can put it over my washing machine.  THey had Electrolux, Smeg, Mëx, and Franke.  Two of the Smeg and one Mëx were on pretty good sales, but I can't find the Mëx anywhere on the internet to learn about it.  It is made in Italy, but I can find no reviews or mention of it.

I was able to find many reviews for Smeg as a whole, some good, and some bad.  Maybe more bad than good. And the Electrolux reviews were generally good.

When I eventually get a house or townhome, I plan on shipping in a gas Wolf from the US, but as I am in a condo, I need an electric.  I don't want to spend a ton of money on it.  The Electrolux is 18,000 baht, the Mëx is on sale from the normal 25,000 down the the sale price of 17,000 baht, and the Smeg is down from 30,000 to the sale price of 20,000 baht.

Anyone have an knowledge on these brands?

Why can't you use gas ? Comes in a bottle.

Condo owners and building forbid it.

There are many counter top ovens in Thailand. I bought a Toshiba top of the line model which is a microwave combined. You will see it everywhere at any Central department store. About ~20,000 baht. In my opinion, it is a waste of money. Lots of programming capability that i never use. It also doesn't cook evenly around the plate. Buy something cheaper and smaller. It will do the job. You don't need fancy timers. As my mom used to say, "It's done when it looks done."

Another possibility would be a small convection oven based on the design of a large glass or steel bowl with a small electric blower unit feeding in hot air from the top. These are quite cheap but seem to work well enough to be a useful stop gap. I've roasted a chicken and potatoes a few times in one that we bought from Big C. It also struck me that the blower unit could be used easily enough with a small brick-built oven outside.

Re. your question about those brands.

I have an Electrolux built in oven I bought from HomePro and fitted into a home made cabinet. I use it for 2-3 hours every day and it has worked perfectly so far with very good results.

In our place we have a Fagor convenction oven. Works well.

I second that.
