Birth Registration For Kid Born In Swiss

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been married with Thai wife in Swiss legally for almost 1.5 years, however, we have not yet registed our marriage in Thai law. We are now living in Swiss.

Now our baby is dued to be born in July. I have some questions , please kindly advise-

1. We want to make birth registration for our baby both in Swiss and Thai law. For Swiss, I have no problem. But for Thai, I know that I must contact Thai Embassy. My question is our marriage is not yet registered in Thai law. Can my baby has my surname?? or she must use her mother's surname?

2. Does anyone know the procedures to regist birth in Thai embassy?? Please advise. What are the required documents ??

3. Can we regist our marraige at Thai embassy in Swiss??

4. Is that true if Thai wife has changed her surnbame to her husband's surname , she can't no more has right to buy or own land /property in Thailand? My wife watched some Thai Tv program, and they talked about thsi topic. She wasn't sure whether she misunderstood any point or not. So pls clarify ...

Thanks in advance for all advices..

regards,

Lakdee

Baby would have your surname, even if you weren't married at all. The surname of the father on the Birth Certificate is the surname given to the child usually.

You might want your wife or someone else to confirm the Thai spelling you want...

Based on what my wife needed in the UK (which might not be the same) - your wife would go, with her ID card, your marriage certificate/registration, and the child's birth certificate. (Although I don't think we actually registered the birth as such - just applied for a Thai passport for our child born in London.)

It might be simplest to call the embassy first to confirm that's everything. (Might have been easier for me as we got married in Thailand, so our wedding certificate was in Thai. Also - you probably need a certified translation of the forms when they're not in English or Thai).

3. Can we regist our marraige at Thai embassy in Swiss??

No personal knowledge - sorry.

But I would have thought so...

No longer true.

As in - my wife changed her surname when we got married over 6 years ago, and we've bought property in Thailand since then. The only thing is, when she goes to the land office to register, you usually have to sign a declaration that the property isn't yours. (i.e. it is HER property, not jointly owned - as foreigners are not permitted to own land, you cannot even inherit in the event of her death...)

Go to your local Thai Embassy with the child's birth certificate,

your wife's passport and it should be quite a simple matter.

This has been covered before.

Try a search.

Actually, I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who has had experience in getting a foreign registered marriage recognised in Thailand. A few potential opportunities for me to move back to BKK look like they are about to happen (fingers crossed), so this may be an issue for me sooner rather than later.

No problems Samran. Your OS marriage ( Aust. NZ or Brit ) is fully recognized here :o No need for registration at all. A certified Thai translation of your marriage papers, and a true copy certification will do you.

Brilliant news. Now all I have to do is wait for someone to offer me a job!!!

:o A bloody Thai wanting expat salary :D

Not an expat salary, just an 'extremely good' local salary, hopefully......

I'll let the Missus get the foreign teacher package to pay for the housing.

All this is still very speculative and potentially still a couple of months away. But we want out. We can't stand the English/Londoners any longer, though we do like their new Green Cards which we both now have. :D
