Blackandwhite
Visiting Samui in March, not sure where to stay, Lamai or Chewang, Is there much distance between them, if so how much in a taxi ? want the option of night life without missing the beaches of Chewang or are the Lamai beaches as good ??, any thoughts on this would be good. Was looking at staying in Tango Beach Resort. Help and info would be good. Comming with my cousin who has never visited Thailand so he is very much looking forward to a mix of all the things Samui has to offer.
Lite Beer
The beaches in Chaweng and Lamai are both good. Only about a 10 minute drive between the two. Chaweng is a lot bigger , with more restaurants and bars. A bit nondescript though . You could be anywhere in the world. Lamai has some nice restaurants but is a bit overun with Girly Bars. Not that this is a problem. It might even suit you. Travel between the two is ok in the daytime by using the Sontgtaews (spelling). At night time you are at the mercy of the rip off yellow taxi drivers. Avoid them like the plague.
happylarry
Why not stay in Chaweng for a few days and then move to Lamai for a few days then you get to experience both places without all the late night travel which can be both expensive and dangerous. The only other option is renting a car or bike to travel between the two.
PoorSucker
Don't ride a bike night time between Chaweng and Lamai. No functioning lampposts and to many drunk drivers. As said. Take some nights in Lamai and some in Chaweng. In March there is no need to pre booking.
Birdman
Would not say that. Feb and March were the top months. This year...we will see. Quite dangerous to drive a motorbike in the night. Taxi prices Lamai - Tango, 30 minutes, in the night negotiated 300-500 Baht, during daytime by local taxi 60 Baht/person, appr 45 minutes.
