Ferengi is already the same word as farang, they come from the same source, but it's the Indian version. The writers at Star Trek took an Indian word for westerner and used it for the ferengi as they saw cultural similarities. Who really fits star trek ferengi more, Thais or westerners, I don't know, but the writers clearly thought westerners.
