What do you think of the proposed online lottery? Do you think enough Thais are online to make a difference? Will it worsen the gambling problem here or make no difference at all?

Consider this - It presents MPs and Government Officials with the 'Opportunity' to write a 'Specification' and 'Manage' the purchase of the technology / award the running contract.

So another centralized solution that puts the 'decision' to spend a huge amount of money in the hands of people who like to 'manage' such projects.

Consider this too - It would undoubtedly bring business to the 7/11 and Family Mart Stores / Supermarkets / Fillings Stations around Thailand and remove income from the large numbers of very poor people who are currently selling lottery tickets.

There are more than enough non-transparent ways for government officials to enrich themselves so why add another?

Ah but that's a good opportunity to sell them laptops with AIS 3G connections...

good point GH. On Koh P the people selling lottery tickets are not poor but generally have shophouses but I understand that a large number of lottery sellers in Bkk are blind or handicapped, certainly won't be doing them any favors.

Could not have said it better.. corrupt governments love these projects to skim as much from them as possible the rich will get richer and the taxpayer pays for it.

Bear in mind that before Mr Somchai sells the lottery ticket on the street it has been through several distributors, all of whom take a cut. The real winners from the current system arent the government, they are the five companies that have the rights to buy the tickets from the GLO. These are then distributed around the country by the, These companies, which make hundreds of millions of baht every month are the real winners.

If there is an online lottery system they will be the ones who lose out big time. Coincidentally, they are Democrat party backers, possibly one reason why Abhisit cancelled the online lottery at the last minute. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

As i do not like to pay 110-120 Bath for a 80 Bath ticket.

Good

I think in a onlinelottery the sellers can not sell overpriced tickets anymore and the "hinterman" are out of business!?
