You can use cashew nut as substitute for cooking.

Thanks. I read somewhere that the macadamia nut is a close substitute.

I was going to make some Laksa paste and the recipe called for it. However, I cannot imagine the hawkers in Singapore using something that "exotic" or expensive for such a common dish.

I'll give cashew nut a try.

Someone in the family from Singapore? Candle nut is a common ingredient in Nonya dishes.

For laksa, you need some laksa leaves, fresh or dried. Curry leaves can be a substitute if you do not have any.
