New airport could make 'shock impact'

PATTAYA: -- Suvanabhumi airport's opening could have a shock impact on the development of the eastern and central regions, academics and private sector commentators told a seminar.

Thongchai Sangkeo, of Rambhai Bharni Rajabhat University's faculty of agriculture in Chantaburi, said the airport would inevitably lead to ''speedy and strong impact'' on eastern region development which included Chon Buri, Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat.

He said tourists would flood into nearby Pattaya and Koh Chang while labour would move into eastern provinces and perimeter provinces such as Samut Prakan and Chacheongsao.

Koh Chang could end up being over-exploited by tourists, as tourist numbers were likely to increase.

The airport would shortern the trip to the eastern provinces.

''Koh Chang could become a second Pattaya where all the nightlife fun is based on Western culture,'' he said.

Foreign businessmen could snap up land on the island and drive up prices.

The government should plan and monitor the development of Koh Chang and the eastern region as a whole.

Mr Thongchai was speaking at the National Economic and Social Development Board seminar on the future direction of central region development under the tenth National Economic and Social Development plan, which will be adopted in October 2006.

Why the sudden worry about Koh Chang??

Who has a vested interests there??

Why was this "Shock Impact" not considered when they planned the

airport, not a few months before it is due to open???

On a slow news day, they'll print any speech by any minor govt. official.

Well, Chicago's Midway airport was very poorly located and overcrowded in the 1950's, and from the day that its replacement (O'Hare) opened, the new airportt spent at least 30 years as the busiest airport in the world. Eventually they reopened Midway, just as they still use (or reopened) Hobby in Houston, Love Field in Dallas, etc. But Chicago was growing westward anyway, and Houston was developing to the northeast anyway, etc.

Cities develop; it's called urban growth. Sometimes a major development will cause the growth to change vectors (direction). If San Antonio ever moved its airport from north central to southeast, that quadrant of the city would grow for the first time in 40 years. But precisely because the SE side of town died 40 years ago, people still wouldn't want to live there.

Surely, there will be industrial growth became Suvamburichiapanatasat Airport is now there. We can assume the smart, rich Chinese-Thai land speculators bought up the land long ago.

There are a couple of great quotes here:

1. He said tourists would flood into nearby Pattaya and Koh Chang

The last time I checked Koh Chang was about 300km from BKK. I doubt if the fact that the new airport is maybe 20 - 30 km closer will have a big impact on the travel time out there.

2. Foreign businessmen could snap up land on the island and drive up prices.

You mean foreigners can own land on Koh Chang??? Where do I sign up to buy some?? :o

Actually they have the whole "scanner scandal" to fill the pages with. The Nation did, with all the names and details and interviews and timelines. Bangkok Post had "now everything is ok" article that barely mentioned that.

Good example of how Bangkok Post doesn't like to rock the PM's boat by sitting quietly and motionless in it's seat and The Nation enjoys standing up in the little dinghy and leaning hard from side to side.

Hey, what's that supposed to mean?

What are the differences between the Thai nightlife and Western culture nightlife?

As has been pointed out - he's a professor of agri-culture, not Thai-culture.

Probably doesn't have to pay the chickens he molests, so P4P is 'Western' culture.

The difference between Thai nightlife and Western nightlife?  Well the Thai's don't take their chickens to the mall (or anywhere else public), they usually don't pay as much and they definitely don't marry them!

Not always... this is one case where the local price per kilogram is often much much more than the foreign price.

:D:o
