Metered Taxis In Khon Kaen From January 20

Update:

When the taxi service started in KK a couple years ago, everyone used the meter. Now, for ANY destination, I have to fight them to use the meter. From the bus station last month, I asked no less than four taxi drivers for service, but all refused to use their meter, so I passed them up. It then became pointless to ask other drivers as the ones I had just spoken to shouted to the others not to take me as a passenger. Exactly the kind of "<deleted>" I've experienced in the touristy areas of Thailand.

I finally called the taxi company number, made my complaint in Thai, waited 20 minutes, and they sent a driver who spoke English and used his meter.

Other than that one guy, everyone wants to bargain with you at the same prices that the KK tuk tuk mafia have always charged. Definite collusion going on.

No better than Pattaya and Phuket now. bah.gif

You've tried all the taxis? Several hundred of them at this time, so that's impressive.

My family uses them regularly and haven't had any problems with them not using the meter.

You and I obviously don't travel in the same "circles." Try getting a meter-using taxi at any of the bus stations. Yes, "everyone" is used rhetorically, meaning everyone with whom I have come in contact behind the wheel of a taxi--which might be pretty close to 100 over the last 2 years. No, I don't claim to have ridden all 200 taxis, so lighten up a bit with your ridiculous rebuttal, would you? rolleyes.gif

REAL TAXIS! in Khon Kaen whatever next? Maybe a scam or two....me thinks, glad to hear it biggrin.gif just hope the thais will use them instead of drinking and driving!! which seems so ingrained into there way of life.

I have a dream.

Had metered taxis in Buriram for about 6 months but the problem is the drivers do not want to turn the meter on when a farang hires them.Hope it is not the same in Khon Kaen.

I don't often use the Khon Kaen taxis but especially late at night I've said: Look I know what the fare will be and I know you'll be coming back empty. I've done this many times and the meter rate will be X baht so I'll give you X baht plus a 20 or 40 or whatever baht tip. That (at least so far) has always worked and we never get to the point of a meter on/off disagreement.
