Hello to everyone i have just discovered this site and what a fantastic find it is .For my first post I was hoping somebody might be able to give me some advice in bringing my thai wifes son to Australia when we go there next week.

We plan to bring the son out on my wifes prospective resident visa as a dependant and have filled in the necessary paperwork. On entering Thailand we have to get a passport for the son and a court order as soon as we get there before we lodge the visa ?.

How long does it take to get a childs passport and does anybody know how long it will take to get a dependents visa in thailand once the paperwork is lodged. What is the address ???

Any advice on how to this achieved in the least amount of time would be greatly appreciated.

Some info you requested is available via DIMA website. However, a few years ago I arranged you my wife's son to obtain Oz Permenent Residency Visa. I'll attempt to answer your questions, but please crosscheck with DIMA & Oz Embassy in BKK.

Assuming your wife is applying in BKK & has son's birth certificate etc she can obtain passport in approx 1/3 working days. You don't need a Court Order, but your wife will need to have documents to prove she is son's mother this normally includes paperwork from local council (Ampur) stating wife is natural mother & demonstrate that the natural father no longer has a relationship with son e.g. has abandoned his wife/son. I don't believe you can obtain visa for stepson unless your wife has a Oz PR Visa, temporary is insufficient. You will need to demonstrate you can support stepson financially and accomodation etc. If you wish to apply I strongly recommend you apply via Oz Embassy in BKK. You can get info/address via the WWW. Phone them to make an appointment for you, wife & stepson to personally submit application and non refundable fee; not sure how much budget for approx A$1500. After submitting application son will require a full medical. From submission to receiving visa it took me three weeks. But I have heard it can take up to six months. It depends on your ability to handle the interviewer, follow up without annoying the Embassy staff and that all paperwork is 100% correct.

I did this a couple of years ago, it was a slow process due to the fact that the child was in LOS and we were in OZ, so I would strongly suggest that you try and do it at the BKK embassy.

The cost is AUD$1245.00 if applying overseas.

Download this booklet it contains all of the info you require. :o

Thanks for the feedback guys its appreciated.Anyhwow i have found out that i can bring the son out under my wifes temporary resident visa (form 918) and this works out to be much cheaper than bringing him out when my wife has the permanent resident visa. ($135 compared to $1245) When he arrives in Australia then have to apply to have him added to my wifes PR application

The main concern is how long the process will take once all the papers are lodged in person as i am only going to be in Thailand for 3 to 4 weeks and would love to bring him back when we return. Anybody had any experince on the time wait ?

Are you sure you don't have to pay a fee to convert the temp visa for your stepson to a PR application. My experience is the Oz Govt will charge for any further visa application. It's worth cross-checking. As previously mentioned the process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to six months depending on how you manage the application in BKK. I assume the child does have any English skills. Therefore one thing to careful of is free access to state government school education on the temp visa you refer to. I recommend you check out with the Department of Education in your State. We had to present our son's PR visa before he was admitted to the English for migrant children program. Unless you have already done so, would need to assess location of school closest to you where they have the facilities. Not all state schools are funded for ESL. Remember to bring a translated copy of child's last school report.

Your son will be included on your wife's visa application, for a start, he will have to have the medicals and if over 16 also a police check (even if he is not travelling to Oz or even holds a passport)

As far as the schooling goes it's free, you will have to clear it with the international schools dept ( I cant remember the exact name but if you ring your local school they will give you the address and phone number).

We are in Adelaide ane there are 2 schools that cater for non English speakers, one primary and one secondary and I suggest you leave the child in the school for as long as you can, it's a bonus in the long run.

My son is in year 9 at a normal high school and is doing really well, even got a "B" for English
